MAP 110 Student Learning Guide Chapter 1 Medical Assistant Duties and Characteristics What duties do you think a Medical Assistant performs while at work? Medical Assistants can do a lot of different things such as administrative work, to clinical and even go into the labrotary capacity. Whether that’s gathering supplies, working with payroll, being your physicians right hand or performing basic lab tests. What personal characteristics do you believe good medical assistants should have? Some characteristics I believe a good medical assistant should have would be being able to be patient, kind, empathy, being able to multi-task, and overall a friendly face. Patient Navigator V.C.12, V.C.13 Come up with a definition for the term patient navigator (do not use the textbook definition) . Then list several examples of how a medical assistant acts as a patient navigator. Define “Patient Navigator” in your own words. A “Patient Navigator” to me means someone who is able to help people understand healthcare issues and help them solve those problems. How does a Medical Assistant act as a patient navigator? A Medical Assistant acts as a patient navigator by intervening on the behalf of the patient, foir example with insurance policies or medical bills. What is similar about and what is different? I think what is similar is that they would both be helping the patient in an administrative sense such as advocating for them with insurance issues, but overall they’re different because a medical assistant does more than that, perhaps they’re qualified in different areas that a patient navigator wouldn’t be. MAP 110 Student Learning Guide Define “Scope of Practice” The Scope of Practice describes what procedures, actions and processes that a healthcare preactioner is allowed to do. It’s limited to that which the law allows, and differs in different states. Click or tap here to enter text. Review the Colorado MA scope of Practice at: http://www.aama-ntl.org/docs/default-source/legal/co-delegable-duties.pdf?sfvrsn=4 What key points do you see regarding the scope of Practice of Medical Assistants in Colorado? In Colorado a license to practice medicine isn’t required for rendering services other than prescribing drugs, and it states the physician can delegate both clinical and administrative work to you such as measuring vitals, venipuncture/phlebotomy and immunizations along with other things. Colorado has a broad scope of practice for Medical Assistants. What might some of the advantages and disadvantages of the broad scope of regulations for Medical Assistants in the state of Colorado be? I think a disadvantage would be because it’s so broad you might be asked to do something you’re not comfortable with or haven’t done, as well as nothing states there has to be supervision by someone who is indeed qualified. I believe an advantage would be that the person would gather more on the job experience perhaps. Another disadvantage could be the patient having something done to them that a licensed person could’ve executed properly. Review the scope of practice for New York, Montana and Delaware Take notes on the three different states below. State # 1: New York https://www.op.nysed.gov/professions/specialist-assistants/professional-practice/ utilization-of-medical-assistants What key take points do you see regarding the scope of Practice of Medical Assistants in New York? In New York they aren’t allowed to have unlicensed persons to assist in the care of their patients because it is deemed to be unprofessional. Even if they are deemed to be capable they don’t consider it to be legal. How does this compare to Colorado? In comparison to Colorado, New York has more defined guidelines for their personnel, and are required to have proper training for such tasks, While in Colorado these guidelines are a bit more loose. MAP 110 Student Learning Guide State #2: Delaware http://www.aama-ntl.org/docs/default-source/legal/de-delegable- duties.pdf?sfvrsn=4 What key take points do you see regarding the scope of Practice of Medical Assistants in Delaware? In Delaware it seem to me that there isn’t much research regarding what they can and can’t do. In this letter though, it states that they must follow common law legal practices. They can do administrative tasks, venipuncture and phlebotomy and administering injections as long as they’re competent to do so. They also state that the physician can delegate these tasks to medical assistants and ather personnel. How does this compare to New York? In New York , this doesn’t quite work the same way because it is deemed to be unprofessional and requires these people to be trained. As far as I understand In Delaware there is no specific mention of this it just states they have to be “competent”. State # 3: Montana http://www.mtrules.org/gateway/ruleno.asp?RN=24%2E156%2E401 Click or tap here to enter text. What key take points do you see regarding the scope of Practice of Medical Assistants in Montana? Montana does require proof that these tasks be done by someone who has the medical training or has completed a program, they also have to provide in the patients record who delegated these tasks. It also states that there has to be supervision to ensure it’s being done properly. How does this compare to Delaware? I believe Montana has more precise guidelines which could benefit not only the person who is delegating these tasks but also the patient, because there is some level of supervising for these tasks to be done up to standard procedure, Delaware doesn’t which could lead to a lot of problems for the person delegating and for the patient.
