1 Adult Substance Use Assessment Ashley Mock Walden University SOCW 6111: Advanced SW Practice I Dr. Folusho Otuyelu October 1, 2023
2 Adult Substance Use Assessment Assessment Tool I analyzed the Level 2—Substance Use—Adult (Adapted from the NIDA-Modified ASSIST) assessment tool (American Psychiatric Association n.d.). The tool includes 15 questions that examine prescription and illegal drug usage in adults (American Psychiatric Association, n.d.). Each question explores the intensity and frequency of the use of multiple different substances (American Psychiatric Association, n.d.). I chose this tool because I currently work with the substance use disorder (SUD) population and have not used this scale specifically. Advantages and Limitations This assessment tool possesses many advantages. Asking direct, closed-ended questions allows the clinician to observe reactions and explain anything the client may not understand. An interviewer can also immediately describe the findings to the participant for clarity and include the participant in determining if further intervention and referrals are needed. (USDA, 2018). This screening tool can be utilized throughout treatment and at multiple appointments (American Psychiatric Association, n.d.). This allows clinicians to track progress over time. Continuous high scores may indicate substantial abuse and should be investigated, addressed, and monitored. (American Psychiatric Association, n.d.). The Level 2- Substance Abuse tool can enhance connections between primary healthcare providers and SUD treatment programs (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2011). This screening tool may also possess limitations. Self-screening tools may prevent the reporting of drug use due to stigma, fear, and legal consequences (Oga et al., 2020). The ASSIST is currently only validated for usage in interviews. More study is required to evaluate whether it
3 is acceptable for self-administration (USDA, 2018). Also, it is possible that clients may not have the trust and rapport with physicians to disclose this information. This assessment tool does not provide a diagnosis and may leave high-risk participants without the assessment they genuinely need (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2011).
