In each section of the Radiology chapter, there is a certain order the testing is in (not including special testing for certain body parts). What is this order? Correct answer: X-ray, CT, MRI For many of the subsections in the Radiology section, there is a certain order that the testing takes. With the exception of any special testing sprinkled in between, the order is: X-ray, CT, and MRI scans. There are certain sections for PET scans and all other special radiologic testing. Reference: ICD-10-PCS Expert 2023. Pg 522-543. A patient who is pregnant with twins in her 20th week comes in for a follow- up transabdominal ultrasound. How would this be billed? Correct answer: 76816, 76816-59 In the index of the CPT book, you would look up ultrasound, pregnant uterus. This gives you the code range 76801-76817, which can be found in the Radiology section. As you look through the codes listed in the range, you will see that a follow-up ultrasound can be billed by using code 76816. The question states that this transabdominal ultrasound is a follow-up, so this code would be the correct answer. Going a bit further for this question, you will notice that there is a note stating that you need to code 76816 with a modifier 59 for each additional fetus examined in a multiple pregnancy. Since this is a twin pregnancy, you will use an extra 76816 code with modifier 59 attached. This will fully, correctly answer the question. Code 76815 is for an ultrasound, limited, 1 or more fetuses. The question does not mention that it is a limited ultrasound, so this would be an incorrect answer. Code 76817 is for a transvaginal ultrasound. The question states that it is a transabdominal ultrasound, not transvaginal, so this is incorrect. Reference: AMA CPT® 2023 Professional Edition. Pg 547.
