1. Identify vaccinations routinely administered to ferrets. (1 Point) Ferrets get canine distemper vaccines between 6-8 wks, 10-12 wks, and 14-16 wks. They also get Rabies at 14-16 wks. These are continued annually (Colburn, 2024). 2. Is the animal's TPR within normal limits? If no, please elaborate. (1 Point) Eddie’s temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate are all within normal limits. 3. Identify the term used to describe a female ferret. When admitting the ferret to the hospital, the owner stated that she would have liked to purchase an intact female ferret but the breeder recommended against it. Why is spaying of ferrets highly recommended? (2 Points) Females that are intact are called Jills, and females that are spayed are called Sprites (Colburn, 2024). If females are not spayed and go into heat and are unable to mate they can develop a severe anemia that can be life threatening. This means if she gets an intact female she will have to have it spayed, or mate her and she will have to take care of kits (Baby ferrets)(Palazzolo & Palazzolo, n.d.). 4. The veterinarian requested abdominal radiographs. Identify the standard abdominal views used for a ferret. (2 Points) The most common two views are right lateral and ventrodorsal or dorsoventral depending on what the Vet wants (Girling, 2009). 5. Radiographs revealed a suspected gastric foreign body. Prior to performing an abdominal exploratory, the veterinarian intends to pass a flexible endoscope into the stomach to try and remove the object. Your clinic has a high quality endoscope. Identify the characteristics of a quality endoscope. (2 Points) - Four way deflection capability - 180 degrees upward deflection tip - Water flush - Air insufflation - Suction (Today’s Veterinary Practice, 2022). 6. You are preparing the endoscope for the procedure. After turning on the light source you notice several black dots in the field of view. Identify the probable cause of this problem. State how it is best prevented. (2 Points)
Black dots mean there are broken fiber optic glass fibers, you need to be careful handling the scope and avoid bending at sharp angles (Today’s Veterinary Practice, 2022). 7. You are preparing the accessory equipment when you notice that the jaws of the forceps will not open. Identify an appropriate action to take to resolve this problem. (1 Point) Soak the jaws in warm water for 10-15 minutes (Today’s Veterinary Practice, 2022). 8. Passage of the scope reveals a makeup sponge in the stomach. The veterinarian intends to remove the sponge using rat tooth forceps passed through the working channel. What is a channel? The channel is a hole or port where the instruments can pass. 9. The ferret was moved to the recovery room. You begin to clean the endoscopic equipment. List the supplies you will assemble to properly clean flexible endoscopic equipment. Identify the steps of a basic cleaning protocol. (2 Points) - Approved cleaning solution - Gauze - Cotton tip applicators - Channel cleaning brush You want to flush air and water through the channel and wife down a flexible portion of the tube with gauze that was soaked in cleaning solution (use gloves). Place the distal end of the scope into the cleaning solution and suction a small amount through alternating suction air and water. Remove the air and water suction valve and biopsy cap and place in the cleaning solution. Pass a clean brush through the biopsy port and lubricate and replace the valves. Wipe down the external surface with alcohol, clean the lens with lens cleaner and paper. FInally, replace the cap and hang in the cabinet with ports in an open position (Today’s Veterinary Practice, 2022). 10. Your assistant asks, "Why do you hang the endoscope instead of putting it in a case?" Please respond. (1 Point) Hanging the scopes protects the fiber optic fibers from bending or breaking and allows the scope to drain and dry completely which helps prevent bacteria growth (Today’s Veterinary Practice, 2022).
