Report
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides emergency medical aid in over 70 countries and faces many challenges regularly. For example, security risks from working in dangerous or volatile places where there is concern for their own safety and security. Another challenge, as a non-governmental organization (NGO), is they rely on private donations, and it can be difficult to secure funding. Also, there is often limited access to medical supplies, which is generally in great demand. They rely on volunteer medical personnel but struggle to find qualified candidates for dangerous and remote environments. Despite these challenges, MSF remains committed to providing medical care to those in need. Despite ongoing challenges, Doctors Without Borders persistently provides medical care worldwide. Strategies to Avoid Blame – It’s easy to cast blame when there is a lack of communication and not everyone is informed. For instance, if medical personnel arrive at a location to provide care and find that necessary supplies have not arrived or are not insufficient in quantity. Another example would be showing up in an area that is typically considered hostile territory, but through lack of communication, were not properly informed. Minimization – We have to be reminded that these doctors are volunteering their time and collaborating as a whole group. There are many specialties from multiple areas, and everyone may not have a solid understanding of English. As such, this can create sarcasm, doctors may feel belittled, and emotions running high. Conflict Resolution Behaviors Openness – It’s important for the doctors to state what they are feeling and express what they are feeling. This will help to minimize conflict as everyone can be on a different page. Equality – I am a firm believer in the golden rule – to treat others as you would expect to be treated. Acknowledging that other doctors may be out of their element and working in unknown conditions to what they may be used to will help the goodwill and reduction of conflict amongst themselves. There are many challenges Doctors Without Borders have to face, so challenges amongst themselves should not be one of them. Doctors Without Borders - USA . (n.d.).
