The Purnell Model looks at elements that influence culture and the individual that resides in the culture. The model looks at 12 domains such as community, family, person, health care practices, communication, and many more. This model is used as a representative for healthcare workers to interact respectfully and without bias. The goal is to understand where a patient comes from, how that community interacts with each other, and how much of their culture do they fully practice. Nurses must understand the most important parts of that person’s culture and set their own opinions aside. The Purnell model provides an outline to help nurses do this effectively. The Japanese culture greatly values time. They have a monochromic sense of time. They believe in punctuality and being on time. Though they believe in punctuality, the meetings that must start on time may not end on time, because it helps foster relationships(Abdalla, 2018). Relationships are greatly valued in the Japanese culture.
The Japanese have a sense of closeness to one another, and this is called collectivism. The group is celebrated more than the individual in Japan. They have close-knit groups in which they communicate and socialize with. The Japanese culture’s proxemic or nonverbal communication is that of personal space. They enjoy their personal space and try not to break the invisible barriers when communicating with others (THE JAPANESE MIND: PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS, 2021). The social order of Japan is a stratified society. They have the capitalist class (the bosses), the new middle class(supervisors), and the old middle class(farmers) that work together to lay the societal foundation. Each class has a strong foundation to keep the Japanese society running (Kenji, 2021). Within the home, the Japanese have a strong family value. The Japanese believe in respecting your elders. Multiple generations live within the same household, and they work together to bring harmony to the house.
The Japanese believe in “Patient-Centeredness” when it comes to health, illness, and wellness. The ultimate goal of healthcare is to correctly diagnose those who are sick and have the medical management properly treat the ill to make them better. The Japanese believe in the healthcare system and that it can bring them wellness and prevent illness (Kondo, T. et al., 2022).
