1 ALR Reflection Laqueisha Golding Department of Counseling and Family Therapy, Capella University COUN5830 Professor Name: Dr Kushner December 13, 2023
2 ALR Reflection Expectations and Planning for Track 1 Residency After attending the ALR with my faculty advisor, my expectations for residency 1 became clear because I had a better understanding of how things would go. I will attend my first residency in February of 2024 which is this upcoming quarter. While preparing for the residency, I will continue to read, study, and apply what I’ve learned thus far and practice with family members. I also will start to prepare travel and living accommodations. I understand that residency includes online and face-to-face experience that focuses on core conditions in counseling, theory, treatment planning, basic counseling skills, etc. Timeline for Track 1, Track 2 and Practicum As of now, I’m on track to having my first residency in February 2024. My second residency is on track for November 2024 if I keep every class as scheduled. I will start my practicum in January 2025. I’m most nervous about the in-person experience due to having only online interactions during the duration of this program. My graduation date is set to be in December 2025 depending on the pace of my practicum and internships due to also having to work full-time. Strategies for Professional Networking in Preparation for Fieldwork In preparation for fieldwork, I have decided to find counseling forums in my area via Facebook to connect with future and current counseling professionals. Also, the FAF advisor stated that joining local and national level associations is also a great professional way to network. When looking for site-based learning, I will use Capella resources and reach out to friends/coworkers who have completed their counseling internships already. Before applying for sites, I believe I should reach out to Capella’s career coach to fix up my resume for academic purposes.
3 Goals For academic success, I plan to prioritize time management to ensure that my assignments are completed and submitted on time without interfering much with my personal life. This also goes into my next goal for self-care and life balance, I plan to ensure that I study for a certain amount of time per week but limit my days in the course room so I can still have time for my spouse, family, and friends. Working in the school system, I receive all holidays, and weekends, and have extended breaks throughout the school year that allow me an allotted amount of time to travel and take care of myself so that I don’t experience burnout. My goal for professional identity is to advocate for the population I work with which will be children. In the school system as a co-teacher working with children who have intellectual disabilities, I’ve learned to advocate for my students to ensure that they receive adequate educational help so that they don’t just become a number. Completing counseling courses has helped me reach my goals so far, so I plan to move in the right direction with goal setting.
