Health Research legislations in Pennsylvania

There are many health research related legislations pending in either the commonwealth
court, or other local courts in Pennsylvania. Some are a churn resulting from previous passed
bills, while others are seeking clearance to conduct new studies. In Southwestern PA, a research
by the University of Pittsburgh has formulated the basis for reconstituting whether 1000 feet
away from a natural gas wells is safe enough. Also findings were that children aged 3 and below
who drank water within 1000 feet of an active well are 5 to 7 times more likely to develop
lymphoma (Capitalandmain, 2023). These findings were tabled by the state department of
Environmental Protection with regards to oil and gas industry. A bill was formally introduced by
rep. Danielle Friel Otten to have the wells upto 2500 feet away in the county government cabinet
proceedings and is currently pending in the common wealth court. State department on health in
PA also had emphasized the importance of research in formulating setbacks, and bills.
Another state legislation that seeks to be revised is the physician-only abortion law.
Nurses, and assistant physician also want the state of PA law changed to allow them to prescribe
abortion and not only physicians. Nurses especially from the rural areas argued that no
physiological importance is derived from having a physician prescribe the abortion.
This
legislation also comes under pressure from the research findings of the University of
Pennsylvania that identified an association between restrictions to accessing abortion services
and a higher risk for suicide among young women (Penn Today, 2023). Contrary to the Supreme
Court’s ruling in Dobbs versus Jackson Women’s Health, some certified nurse midwifes, and
physicians testified in a public hearing to amend the PA law. Although the move came under a lot
of pressure from other human rights organizations and whose efforts were deemed inferior the
lobbying nurse midwifes were keen to have the PA law amended.
