History Huntsville Memorial Hospital has been in business for the past 95 years. It was opened on April 4, 1927. According to their website it was originally created as a memorial honoring the military heroes of World War I. The hospitals original mission was to provide “benevolent and charitable services” to those in need. (HMH, 2023) In 1950 the hospital added a new 50 bed facility to the property, which provided room to service more patients. The small hospital located in a rural area of Texas continued to grow in the years to come. In 1955 the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was established. This idea was brought to the administrator at the time James Jackson by Mrs. Charles Lindsay. Mrs. Lindsay was elected President at the first meeting held in January of 1956. Shortly after the group joined the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. (HMH, 2023) Various groups were started under the Auxiliary like
sewing groups, a library committee and social services group. The groups provided services like mending linens, customizing blankets, making puppets, operating a book cart, and assisting the mobile X-ray unit.
Other projects in the 1960’s and 70’s included dispensing Sabin oral vaccines against polio to Walker County residents, opening and staffing a snack bar in the hospital, developing a junior volunteer program, establishing scholarship funds for nursing students and developing an auxiliary newsletter. (HMH, 2023). These services brought more value and helped with the continued expansion. The volunteers saw potential in the hospital at its current state and knew that more could be done to further help the people of Huntsville. In the 1960’s it was petitioned to the County Commissioners for a new addition to the facility. The volunteers
wanted the Commissioners to hold a bond election for building a 35 bed Chronic Care
Facility. Having a facility in the rural area that could accommodate the needs of a person in critical or chronic condition would be not only a game changer for the hospital financially, but also save lives. ill persons would no longer have to be transported to other hospitals to seek care, they would be able to do it close to home and their loved ones. Everyone saw the positivity this would bring to the city, so the county passed the bond. In the 1970’s the hospital continued to grow and evolve as the board pushed for the establishment of a hospital district. The district was approved by voters in Huntsville
in 1975. The district was approved under the name “Walker County Hospital District”. Huntsville Memorial went on do to do majors things which included them joining forces with Hospital Corporation of America also known as (HCA) which would now manage the facility. This new partnership took place in 1976 and provided the hospital with guidance to operate on a larger scale. Around 1977 the facility broke ground on a new 123,000 sq. foot facility which later opened in June of 1979. A long-standing project of the Auxiliary has been providing scholarships to assist nursing students. Through a donation from the late educator Dr. Margaret Powell, the Auxiliary established a four-
year scholarship fund in 1984 for Walker County high school students planning to pursue a college degree in healthcare. (HMH, 2023) Inpatient rehabilitation units were open in 2005 to provide services for patients who required rehab on an inpatient basis. About five years later the facility was able to now provide cardiac services with the addition of the Cardiac Cath Lab in 2010. The Auxiliary continues its tradition of raising funds for hospital projects through book fairs, jewelry sales, bake sales, vending
machines, and gift shop sales. These sales have allowed the Auxiliary to purchase needed equipment and to fund renovations in many areas of the hospital.
After over 40 years Huntsville Memorial Hospital parted ways with HCA and formed a partnership with Community Hospital Corporation. Together, HMH and CHC create a new company to own and operate the hospital.
(HMH, 2023) According to Order (2020) Community Hospital Corporation announced a partnership with the Walker
County Hospital District to create a new company to oversee the hospital. The newly created company is called Huntsville Community Hospital, Inc. This move would help the hospital to get back on track and incorporate new and improved policies and procedures to that facility. CHC President and CEO Jim Kendrick shared, “We are excited to bring CHC’s expertise in hospital management and talent in critical areas such as the revenue cycle and supply chain to strengthen HMH. CHC’s mission to guide, support and enhance the mission of community hospitals and healthcare providers aligns with HMH and its mission to serve residents of Walker County with quality healthcare for years to come.” (Oder, 2020) Throughout the years Huntsville Memorial Hospital transitioned from a small facility who’s focused was on World War I military heroes. To a multispecialty facility with over 120 beds. During the years Huntsville Memorial Hospital saw some highs and lows from switching to different managing companies and constantly expanding. The Hospital was able to achieve a lot even before becoming a part of any company.
In 2022
they celebrated 95 years serving the community. (HMH, 2023) There is so much history behind the Huntsville Memorial Hospital name that will continue in the years to come.
