Read Chapters 5 and 6 in the textbook, mini-lectures, and look through the Radiology and Pathology and Laboratory sections in CPT. Answer the following questions. (20 pts) 1. When billing for hospital radiology, laboratory, and pathology services, what computer program is used to report those services? Chargemaster 2. When the phrase "radiological supervision and interpretation" is not used in the description of a radiologic procedure code, what modifier would be used? Modifier 26 3. What is the branch of medicine that diagnose and/or treats diseases using percutaneous or minimally invasive techniques with the use of imaging guidance? The branch of medicine that diagnoses or treats diseases using percutaneous or minimally invasive techniques with imaging guidance is known as Interventional Radiology. 4. Under Diagnostic Ultrasound there are 4 types of diagnostic ultrasounds recognized. A-mode, M- mode, B-scan, and real-time scan. Describe each one. A-mode (Amplitude mode): A simple form that displays one-dimensional information in the form of spikes on a graph, used mainly for distance measurements. M-mode (Motion mode): Captures the motion of organs or tissues, displaying them as continuous waves on a graph, useful for cardiac and fetal heart monitoring. B-scan (Brightness scan): Provides a two-dimensional cross-sectional view of tissues and organs, displaying various depths as dots of different brightness. Real-time scan: Offers live imaging, showing movement of internal tissues and organs, which is crucial for procedures requiring immediate feedback. 5. What are the two units of radiation measurement called? The two primary units for measuring radiation are the Gray (Gy) for absorbed dose and the Sievert (Sv) for equivalent dose, considering biological effects. 6. What is the Gy equal to? One Gray is equal to the absorption of one joule of radiation energy per kilogram of tissue. 7. The administration of radioisotopes is used in what subsection of the Radiology Section and what are radioisotopes? Radioisotopes are used in the Nuclear Medicine subsection of the Radiology Section. They are unstable atoms that emit radiation, used for diagnostic imaging and therapy. 8. What are three types of cardiac scans performed for various heart conditions:
The thallium 201 scan-examines myocardial perfusion The technetium 99m pyrophosphate scan identifies recently damage myocardial tissue The technetium 99m ventriculogram 9. Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative screening. Qualitative screening determines the presence or absence of a substance. Quantitative screening measures the exact amount or concentration of a substance. 10. What modifier is used when a physician sends a blood sample to an outside laboratory for analysis? When a physician sends a sample to an outside laboratory for analysis, the "90" modifier is used to indicate that the testing was performed by an external lab.
