1 SOLAR HEATING AND COOLING MEMO TO: Avleen Kaur Grewal, Maria Emmanouela Lewis, and Elena Ilina FROM: Ibrahim Ghamlouche DATE: October 05, 2022 SUBJECT: Proposal to write my Final Report as an Evaluation Report on how effective it is to switch to solar heating and cooling This memo is a proposal to write my final report as a evaluation report on solar heating and cooling systems. My final report will focus on how effective it is to switch power sources to solar for heating and cooling systems as it provides less expenses on the long run but could cause issues depending on the weather situation. However, this report will study how efficient solar is and help companies and property owners decide on if the switch is worth it or not. The primary audience for my report will be board members companies and property owners as it brings light to the advantages of solar power as well as its disadvantages. The following memo proposal includes the following sections: problem, Proposed Solution and its Benefits, Description of my Final Report, Method and Procedure, My qualifications, and conclusion It also contains three sources of information that will help me complete my final report and explains how these sources will help me write it. Problem: Solar power is a great investment in general but tends to fall behind when it comes to weather dependency which in certain countries could be very inconsistent. Proposed Solution and its Benefits This report will give the reader all the information they will need to make a proper decision on whether installing solar power for cooling and heating systems is a proper step for them or it is not compatible with what their requirements. Yet another benefit is that this project ought to show my interest in the field and the professionalism of my work. I intend to list this project on my resume and have a copy of the report in my portfolio when am I interviewed for jobs in this field . Description of my Final Report My final report will consist of at least five single-spaced pages of text (excluding visuals, references, and preliminary pages). It will focus on evaluating how convenient is using solar power for cooling and heating systems and what difficulties are faced in the process and if advantages are worth it in comparison to the difficulties that could possibly occur. In addition, if the expenses are reasonable, and Graphics illustrating energy generation will
be included to emphasize points presented in the report. To clarify the technical language used in the report, I will append a glossary. Method and Procedure In writing my final report, I will take three steps to obtain the information I require: 1. I will use my notes and textbooks for my high school physics course as well as mechanics, and I will also look for relevant information sources in the University Library. 2. To find peer-reviewed, academic sources, I will consult the university subject librarian who supervises my field of studies. 3. I will also be searching for information on the Internet. 4. I will solicit interviews from experts who work within the electrical and solar panel industry and talk to my instructors. Information Sources Having begun my preliminary library search, I identified three important information sources that will help me complete my project: 1. Chen, Y., Huilian, H. Xu, J., Wang, J., D. Lund, P. Han,Y, Cheng, T. (2022, July 5 th ) Energy, environmental-based cost, and solar share comparisons of a solar driven cooling and heating system with different types of building. Applied Thermal Engineering 211 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.applthermaleng.2022.118435 This article sheds the light on how solar power can be used in terms of cooling and heating systems and how it works. In addition to studies on how the process has proved itself and what to expect from it. 2. Kalogirou , S., Florides , G. (2012) Solar Space Heating and Cooling Systems. Comprehensive Renewable Energy, 3 , 449-480 https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-12-819727- 1.00003-0 This article shows in depth how solar power works and all the science behind it and how it can be utilised in cooling and heating systems as an alternative to regular power. 3. Figaj, R., Zoladek, M. (2021) Experimental and numerical analysis of hybrid solar heating and cooling system for a residential user. Renewable Energy, 172 , 955-967 https://s100.copyright.com/AppDispatchServlet? publisherName=ELS&contentID=S096014812100447X&orderBeanReset=true This article demonstrates the real life data of the usage of solar panels and how it is in day to day situations. It also demonstrates how usable solar power is for heating a cooling residential users. I will add other relevant sources of information to this list when I complete my research. My Qualifications Here are my qualifications to do this project:
I am currently a UO student pursuing a major in Mechanical Engineering, and I will receive my degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2027. I am qualified to write the report because I have already taken or am currently taking Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, and Engineering Design, and I know what difficulties students experience with the course and understand what needs to be done to overcome them.

At present, I have most of the basic theoretical knowledge required to begin work on the report. To enhance my knowledge of my selected problem/question, I will look for leads on the Internet, and then consult relevant academic publications, the library, and my current and former instructors. At present I do not know much about my selected subject. However, as a first -year student at the University of Ottawa, I have the required research and communication skills to complete the report. To enhance my knowledge of my selected question, I will look for leads on the Internet, and then consult relevant academic publications, the library, and my current and former instructors. Conclusion The study of solar cooling and heating systems and its importance to solar industry as well as organizations and property owners is a direction in research that has not been traveled before. This information will help students, or any other engineers who are interested in solar energy, learn about state-of-the-art approaches to solar energy and heating and cooling systems. I encourage you to contact me if you have questions regarding the report. My phone number is (873)455-3993, and my email address is igham091@uottawa.ca .
