Report
1 | P a g e Lab #X - Lab Name CE 336 – Fluid Mechanics Lab Instructor: Andres Acosta, MS, PE Group Members: (If not group, just YOUR NAME) Last Name, First Name Last Name, First Name Last Name, First Name Date of Lab: mm/dd/yy Date Submitted: mm/dd/yy [FORMAT - 10%]
2 | P a g e Introduction [5%] This is more of an abstract/summary of the experiment, where you will briefly describe the equipment, progression of work, data collected, and calculation results without getting into intricate details (details will be covered and discussed in the body of the report). Write maximum of half a page long. Purpose of Study [ 5%] It can be, but not limited to, one or two sentences. For example, purpose of this laboratory test is to apply principles of specific energy and measure energy loss in hydraulic jump. Theory [15%] Summarize the theory in the lab manual. Note the equations used in the lab report, describing the variables that are measured in the lab, and the constants used to perform calculations. Utilize the numbers used in the lab manual to refer the equations you are noting. Equipment [5%] List of equipment used. Experimental Set-Up & Procedures [10%] Re-write and paraphrase the experimental set-up and procedures listed in the lab manual. DO NOT copy and paste. If any procedures differ in the actual lab than those described in the lab manual, please make mention of that. Sample Calculations [15%] Provide one line of calculation for each type of calculation performed. Include the equation used, and subsequent intermediate steps. Discussion [15%] (Analysis of Experimental Data) Add the tables in the lab manual as part of the report, you may recreate the tables as you see fit. For further analysis, use EXCEL (produce graphs and figures that further analyze the data and results. Always add trend lines to assist with analysis). Explain your results using experimental data collected. Did you get the data/results that were expected? If applicable, what do you think caused the data/results to deviate from what you anticipated? Discuss Answer all question posted in the lab manual in this section. Figures (Graphs): Each figure should have a label (number, letter, full descriptive title). Title or figure number should be placed at the bottom of the figure. Tables: Similarly, each table should have a number or full descriptive title, like table 1 or for example “Results: Measures & Calculated Head loss”. Title of the table should be at the top. Answer lab manual discussion questions. Conclusion [15%] State the purpose of the study. Compare the actual to theoretical results if applicable. Describe the
3 | P a g e results and describe how they compare to what is expected theoretically. If your results are off, appear to be incorrect, or some issue came up during the lab, this is where you want to state it. Wrong results will not cost you points if you can explain how and/or why they are wrong. Also, discuss if the experiment helped in achieving the purpose of the study. References [5%] Minimum one reference – one is the lab manual (provide the lab manual version you are using) and the other is the Fluid Mechanics Textbook. MLA 7 Format.
