EKG/HR Analysis Assignment #1 Overall EKG/HR Project Objective: Students will use the Arduino and Olimex EKG/EMG shield to obtain EKG waveforms, analyze the data in real time, indicate heart beat detection using an LED, and compute and display heart rate on an LCD. Assignment/Challenge Objective: Students will do background research on EKG analysis and revise the algorithm they used in respiratory rate monitoring project, to analyze the EKG waveform, in real time, and compute heart rate. Prerequisites Students should have successfully completed the summative project, in which they design and build a prototype for a respiratory rate monitor. Assignment 1. Find some images of typical, real-life EKG tracings. Note that for this project, we will be gathering actual 3-lead EKG tracings and, similar to the respiratory rate project, you will need to count heart beats and calculate heart rate in beats per minute. Find the time scale for the horizontal axis and the voltage (or millivolt) scale for the vertical axis. What is a typical range for the QRS complex? 2. Keeping in mind the images of EKG tracings, and starting with your code for monitoring respiratory rate, describe, in detail, specific changes that would need to be made so the new code could be used to analyze EKG waveforms. Think about how frequently you need to sample, what you should use for a threshold, criteria for identifying a new heart beat, etc. 3. Find images of at least 3 different pathological EKG tracings (e.g., arrhythmia, previous heart attack, etc.). What additional changes would need to be made, for the system to be able to accurately calculate heart rate from these waveforms. 4. Create a word or Google Doc describing your proposed algorithm. You must include a flowchart and pseudocode that conform to best practices. You must include the images you used for reference (and where you found them). You must convince me that this algorithm will be appropriate for analyzing EKG waveforms. Describe, in detail, any issues that could pose problems. Aside from images inserted in the document, text must consist of well-written, organized paragraphs, composed of complete sentences. Write this document as if you are one of a number of researcher/engineers in competition with each other for funding. NOTES: * You are not revising any code at this stage, just planning. * At this point, I fully expect flowcharts and pseudocode to conform to standards (see the Welcome/Resources folder).
