ENME 489O – Fall 2023
DFM Rules
Name: Nathan Gernand
Date: 10/1/2023
Rule Name: Minimize use of adhesives and
sealants
Rule Number: 1.3
Rule Description:
This set of rules will give guidance on how to avoid using sealants and other adhesives and
why you should avoid doing so when designing for assembly.
Background of Rule (Context):
When relying on something like an adhesive to keep parts together, there are a lot of things
that can go wrong. Although adhesives are very useful and helpful in many scenarios, mass
producing assemblies is typically not one of them.
For example, adhesives are used to join things such as parts together. To do this requires an
immense amount of precision, and to apply this adhesive with a machine would take a very
expensive machine due to the amount of precision required. It is therefore recommended to
use mechanical fasteners as a replacement for these. These fasteners do add to the part
count, but they are replaceable, which adhesive is not, and fasteners are also way more cost
efficient for an assembly.
An argument for using an adhesive would be for when you are doing some DIY maintenance
on a part or assembly. Often times, a person may not have a proper fastener at their disposal
to fix the problem at hand. An adhesive such as glue can be seen as an easy fix for many
problems such as broken assemblies to keep them together for the time being, However, this
adhesive will break down over time and not serve to be as permanent of a fix as a mechanical
fastener.
Rule Condition (If statement):
a)
If you are trying to secure parts that have complex or odd shapes
b)
If the assembly will likely require maintenance or repair in a certain area
c)
If you want to incorporate a bond type that is more resistant to environmental wear
and tear
Rule Consequence (Then statement):
a)
Then the usage of adhesives is warranted as common fasteners are not typically used
in this situation
b)
Then mechanical fasteners are advised to be used
c)
Then mechanical fasteners should be used as they are much less susceptible to
environmental degradation
Rule Illustrations (if needed):
Rule Justification:
By following this set of rules designers and engineers can improve:
Ability to repair: By consulting the information provided under this rule, designers can
determine when adhesive can be used based on if repair may be needed in the future
Cost: Determine when adhesives or fasteners may be more or less cost effective

Please refer to the image attached.
Study the sheet metal assembly at the top of the image. It consists of two main parts, a flexible tube and reinforcement cap. They are attached with 4 self threading fasteners.
Select datum features based on the mating condition. Make sure to note the fit between the parts.
Calculate and apply position tolerances using the fastener formulas on the previous pages.
Apply other necessary geometric tolerances to ensure assembly and minimize mismatch on outside edges.

A datum when used in manufacturing is primarily used for?
Define the functional relationship to another feature on a part, or they have a functional relationship in an assembly. They are the origin from which many Geometric tolerances are measured.
Datums are used to describe how one part must fit or align to a mating part.
A datum should be placed on the smallest surface of the part to be sure that the mating part would fit.
Datums assure that parts will always fit together.

The possible failure modes for bolted joints are:
shear in the bolts
bearning of the bolts on the connected material
tension in the connected parts
torsion in the connected parts

I REPEAT!!!!! I NEED HANDDRAWING!!!!! NOT A USELESS EXPLANATION!!!! I REPEAT SUBMIT A HANDDRAWING IF YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND THIS SKIP IT !
I need the real handdrawing complete it by adding these :
Pneumatic Valves
Each linear actuator must be controlled by a directional control valve (DCV) (e.g., 5/2 or 4/2 valve).
The bi-directional motor requires a reversible valve to change rotation direction.
Pressure Regulators & Air Supply
Include two pressure regulators as per the assignment requirement.
Show the main compressed air supply line connecting all components.
Limit Switches & Safety Features
Attach limit switches to each actuator to detect positions.
Implement a two-handed push-button safety system to control actuator movement.
Connections Between Components
Draw air supply lines linking the compressor, valves, and actuators.
Clearly label all inputs and outputs for better understanding.
