ENME 489O – Fall 2023 DFM Rules Name: Nathan Gernand Date: 10/1/2023 Rule Name: Use modular components Rule Number: 1.1 Rule Description: This set of rules provides guidance to how to make parts easily replaceable so that assemblies can be repaired and changed cheaply and easily. Background of Rule (Context): When designing an assembly, you may forget that it may not be in the same condition throughout the entire life cycle of the product. Parts fatigue, they need to be replaced and repaired in order for the assembly to stay together and to stay functioning. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, but the easiest of those ways is to make sure that as many parts as possible within the assembly are mass produced and commonly accessible to the public. Using common fasteners such as simple screws or washers are recommended. This is because when a part of the assembly breaks or needs to be replaced/repaired, any person could go to a local hardware store and find exactly what they are looking for in no time. If parts are designed to be very niche and the designer uses fasteners and parts that are unique and not replicable by many common parts, make it very difficult for the product or assembly to be repaired. This will undoubtedly happen over time, especially if you are trying to keep manufacturing and assembly costs low. Rule Condition (If statement): a) If you want to reduce inventory and part complexity b) If you are targeting a global market for your assembly product Rule Consequence (Then statement): a) Use parts that are modularly designed b) Incorporate many modular parts that are applicable to all sides of the globe as it will lead to a much better market reach Rule Illustrations (if needed):
Rule Justification: By following these rules, designers can improve: Profits: If selling the product, using parts that are more general to the public allows more people to be likely to buy the assembly. Faster production/assembly: Machines are typically designed to handle more general parts a lot better than niche parts Rule Source: Tencom Ltd. (2023, June 13).
