Construction Problems Project Problem One 1.1 The two features mentioned in the video are Ostentatious Listening, and Equality in Conversational Turn-Taking. According to author Charles Duhigg (2016), if groups practice these qualities, the likeliness of success if heightened. Equality in conversational turn-taking means that each member of a group speaks for an equal amount of time. If all team members speak during meetings, there is a flow of ideas and action plans are much easier to conduct. Therefore, allowing all members a chance to share is an important factor in successful groupwork. In a previous group situation, there was an uneven amount of conversational contribution within the group. The dynamic within the group was that there a dominating leader, who spoke for most of the sessions. This led to people in the team feeling uneasy about sharing ideas and speaking up in group meetings. In this case, the passing of information and ideas was seriously damaged, and therefore our group suffered because of this. Ostentatious listening means to listen with the intent of properly hearing what another has to say. This can otherwise be described as actively listening. This can be done by physically showing and encouraging another to talk in meetings. This is the second half of making a group run successfully. In another group situation, there was a great example of ostentatious listening. When I was explaining an idea to a colleague in a group setting, they maintained sufficient eye contact. Although not all members were focused, the group member who was listening repeated what I had said in agreement. This encouraged other group members to pay attention to what I was saying as well. My group was able to have great success during that meeting, as everyone was practicing ostentatious listening from then on. 1

1.2 One concept that supports the feature of equality in conversation, is the environment. Speaking to an individual in a noisy, distracting environment can often lead to repeating of words and miscommunication. From experience, these situations often lead to only the loudest to be able to be heard. However, being in a physically comfortable and peaceful area can allow conversations to flourish, allowing all to participate. One simple concept that supports the ostentatious listening from the first video is, posture. Posture is a simple way to show speakers that you are engaged with what is being said. This is a non-verbal show of support, that often encourages one to continue speaking. The act of sitting forward toward the speaker shows them you are attentive. This also supports equality in conversations as it allows team members to keep talking, and not shy away from sharing. Another concept is active listening. Important parts of a conversation are listening and speaking. With active listening, both can be used if the instance requires. There are silent ways to show active listening, such as simple nods and smiles. However, active listening can go beyond that. Encouraging words or phrases can be used to allow a speaker to be prompted to say more, as they feel comfort about being heard. This ability to show active listening thoroughly supports the acts of ostentatious listening, while also allowing another to take their equal part in the conversation. 3

Problem Two 2.1 Prefabrication refers to any construction components and elements that have been built or made off- site. It is usually done in a large building facility and is transported to be installed to its final position. With the use of prefab, much time and money can be saved throughout the construction process, as certain factors are more controlled than on a traditional site. A volumetric prefab element is an enclosed usable section that has been built at a factory-like environment. In these sections, called modules, they typically have the internal finishes completed and can be installed on-site in one day (Ecoliv, 2017). An example of completed modules that are used in construction are bathroom modules, seen in figure 1. In this module, there are finished walls, floors and ceilings, including installed fittings in the bathroom. Figure 1 Bathroom Module (Howick Ltd, 2020) 4
Non-volumetric prefab elements often refer to smaller, more simplified sections, that are built in an external facility. These sections are often referred to as panels, such as the wall panels in figure 2. Panels are often pre-prepared and can be assembled on-site (Build offsite, 2016). Due to being flatter than modules, they are easier to transport and customise. In the external wall panels, shown in figure 2, it is shown to be a semi-completed wall with windows being installed to its final position. Figure 2 Wall Panel (Bonito Carpentry, 2018) 2.2 There are multiple challenges with Prefab and Digital Engineering, one of those being Prefab costing more upfront than traditional construction. A way the industry is addressing this is through the education and knowledge sharing about Prefab and Digital Engineering. Educating others that it saves money by reducing time spent, reducing accidents, and reducing stoppages due to poor planning. Additionally, the process of planning is another challenge with Prefab and Digital Engineering. As successful implementation is based on alignment and sequencing, there is a need to carefully plan at the start of the project. To combat this, education on the technology that is available for planning these projects is essential. 5
In Chapter 13 of “Lean Project Delivery”, the authors state that the cost of traditional construction is becoming higher, while productivity decreases. This is aligning with the knowledge presented from the lecture that Prefab can save money and time over the course of the entire build. Found also in Chapter 13, it states that a challenge is evaluating a prefabricated element on its impact. This means that each section that is prefabricated needs to be thoroughly planned out. Including the complexity of the design, sequencing and its effect on the build. This aligns with the upfront challenge of preplanning needing to be extensive and thorough. 6
