Compare and contrast HCPCS Level II codes with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. What are the key differences and similarities, and when is it appropriate to use each type of code? ANSWER……………… HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) Level II and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes are both code systems that are five characters long and both coding systems are used in healthcare organizations, specifically medical billing, and these codes describe both the services and medical procedures. These coding systems both describe whether or not devices were used. HCPS II is used to classify medical services and procedures while CPT is used to describe medical services and procedures. HCPS II are handled by the CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Agency) and are descriptive codes that are used to describe the dispensing of healthcare services and bill for DMEPOS (Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies). CPT codes are handled by the AMA (American Medical Association) and they provide descriptions of the medical services that were used and the procedures that the healthcare workers require for reimbursement. CPT codes also document services that are provided for quality assurance purposes, such as reporting to insurance companies or other third-party payers.
