AFS 444 Assignment 14 Mission My mission is to lead in the 21st century in an intellectual, and professional way. My mission is to lead black women in the 21st century by making them feel safe in their community and have the confidence to go for their dreams by connecting them to other resources that can help them develop skills that can be used in real-world situations that can build up their resumes to get the best jobs and become leaders in society. This is my mission because this is how we create the needed leadership in the community that can bring a closer end to the discrimination and sexism that black women face. I wish to lead by helping diminish the struggles women face as outlined in the reading “the status of black women '' (namely the struggles faced with domestic violence and being the most underrated group in every federal and state office in the United States). My mission is, again, to help black women develop the necessary skills to break the glass ceiling that prevents them from rising to the top and assuming the high positions of leadership such as being a CEO and constantly being looked over for other positions because of stereotypes. As outlined in the class reading “The State of Black Women in corporate America Report”, black women are more likely to be looked over for management positions and other positions higher than that with there being a very small number of black women who are CEOs of fortune 500 companies (only 2 black women) as well as constantly facing discrimination in the workplace. So, my mission is to lead black women into getting any kind of help they need whether it be with domestic violence or legal help, then helping them gain any kind of skill that will allow them to achieve a job or leadership position where they better themselves and the community and inspire other people to achieve their dreams and bridge that gap between black women and other groups in the workplace and community. Goals/Objectives One of my goals is to become a legal advocate for domestic abuse victims. My goal is to hopefully get an internship at the Durham crisis center where I would be able to help women with any kind of domestic abuse situation. This is my goal because according to the Women's Leadership and Resource Center, Black women are 3 times more likely to be killed than white women. I wish to help decrease the number of black women who stay in abusive situations that could potentially lead to their deaths. One of my other objectives is to potentially open a help center where people can come and earn any kind of certification that they need to get a good well-paying job and as a gateway to potentially earn a higher degree such as a bachelor's or master's, or even something as simple as finding something they like to do and are passionate about because that is how you inspire people to follow in your footprints. Another one of my objectives is to potentially offer therapy services. My goal is to offer therapy services because black women go through a lot in life and in the workplace according to the Center for Law and Social Policy black people are the most exploited group in the United States. So, throughout life and in work black women are being taken advantage of, and their minds are molded to believe that they deserve said treatment and cannot get better. I believe therapy would benefit everyone to break them out of this mindset so they can achieve better than what people say they can. Audience
As talked about a lot in previous parts of this plan the main people of my audience are black women as I feel black women are one of the least helped groups, in terms of there is not a lot of resources that are specifically designed for them, to help them. However, my audience is anyone who feels as if they can benefit from any of my goals or my mission. Because overall my main mission is to make people feel safe and comfortable in their community and to earn any kind of skill necessary to better and advance their lives. So my audience is anybody who needs help in any kind of violent situation, in need of help to overcome any kind of obstacles like addiction or homelessness, and anybody interested in advancing their education, but with a main focus on black women. Skills I will Use In the reading Athletic Leadership Skills, there is a list of skills that are useful for black women in the Athletic field however some of those skills would also be useful for me to use to accomplish my mission and goals. One of those skills mentioned is communication skills. If I wish to accomplish what I want to my communication skills need to be the best because my whole mission involves communicating resources and help to people in need, it involves talking to everyone who walks through the doors to help them with getting certifications, therapy, legal help, and making sure they feel safe and comfortable with me, so communication is by far the most important skill I will use. Another skill I will use, that is important in a mission such as this one and business according to Harvard Business School, is emotional intelligence. This is also an important one for me because again what I plan to do involves being able to emotionally connect with people to understand what they are going through. One last skill I plan to use is creativity. I believe this one is an important skill for me to use because this is what will draw people to my mission and what I plan to do to actually either try and receive the help offered or want to join to also help people. How will I engage Black Women Leaders? One of the ways I will try to engage other black women leaders is by working alongside them when it comes to the certification programs, such as trying to have black women teach those classes, or when it comes to the people who do take up the therapy offer try to have Black women be the therapist. I will try to engage black women in those ways because I believe other people will open up more and be more willing to seek help or certification programs. After all, it is taught by someone who understands what they are going through no matter what race or gender that person is. Another way I will try to engage Black Women leaders is by making connections with the local black-owned business. This is so if any of the people who come seeking help I can connect them to job opportunities in the community and help other Black Women either get jobs or get the business hardworking employees. Another way I would try to engage Black Women leaders is by asking them for any stories or advice on what they went through to get to where they were, such as to tell the stories of the discrimination and sexism they went through to show people that it is common and to connect them to people when went through, or are going through the same thing they are.
