Name the Federal Act that is the central piece of environmental legislation. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conversation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) 2. What are the three (3) tiers of government that jointly administer environmental protection? Federal Australian State & Territory Parliaments Local Councils 3. Where can you find the environmental legislation that applies to your state or territory? Australia has 6 state parliaments. It also has 2 territory parliaments known as legislative assemblies. These parliaments are located in Australia's 8 capital cities. Each state, apart from Queensland, has a parliament that consists of 2 houses. The Queensland Parliament has only 1 house—the Legislative Assembly—making it unicameral - single-house. 4. Where can you find the local government environmental by-laws and regulations that apply to an automotive workplace? Environmental laws are policed by the appropriate regulatory authority, usually the EPA or the local Council. /var/filecabinet/temp/converter_assets/41/d7/41d760bf5453cd41ebef9a4f8c4da66fefb369e7.docx Imagine Education Assessment Questions Part A
5. What procedures do you need to follow in the workplace for reporting environmental damage and breaches? If there is environmental damage and breaches occur, you must contact the Local Council or the EPA as soon as you become aware of the incident. This duty to notify pollution incidents extend to employers, the person carrying out the activity, employees, occupiers, contractors, and agents. You have to make damage report. It is a document written to provide descriptions of a specific type of damage. It applies to a damaged object or property damage, this type of document encompasses all of it. It benefits people in insurance cases as it allows them to justify what has happened and to assert their right to be covered. 6. What procedures and processes can an automotive workshop implement that will support environmental sustainability practices with regards to the following: o Reducing waste o Reusing material o Recycling waste Give one example for each and insert your answers in the table below: Waste management Example of procedure or process Reducing waste Use refillable spray bottles for liquids used in the shop such as cleaning products. Reusing material Waste oil from cleaning and degreasing can be separated and filtered for recovery. This can enable the reuse of the degreasing solution, or at least extend its life. Recycling waste Segregate the waste by placing sufficient bins/containers for each type of waste at waste collection points, depending on the variety and quantity of the wastes expected from the location. Effective and timely replacement of the segregated bins/containers to the waste disposal areas. So you can segregate the materials from reuse, dispose and recycle materials. 7. The following are different types of waste that is produced by the automotive industry: o Coolant and oils o General rubbish Explain what the impact is if these are released into the environment in the table below. Waste product Impact on the environment Coolants and oils It can cause water pollution. Water contamination involves the introduction of coolants and oils into the waters or the positioning of such material where it is likely to enter the waterways. This includes the storm water and /var/filecabinet/temp/converter_assets/41/d7/41d760bf5453cd41ebef9a4f8c4da66fefb369e7.docx

groundwater schemes. General rubbish Hazardous chemicals can pollute the soil and nearby water . These toxins eventually enter the human body via the food chain. The contaminants also inhibit plant growth and can cause health issues in animals. 8. Noise is another environmental problem in the automotive industry. Explain the effect noise has on the environment. Noise pollution has an enormous environmental impact and does serious damage to wildlife. It can interfere with breeding cycles and rearing and is even hastening the extinction of some species . 9. What impact does the following types of waste have on the environment and how should it be disposed of? o Cleaning material – *It can cause water pollution. *Empty packages can then be recycled or discarded with other household waste. Unused amounts of cleaning products can generally be safely disposed of down the drain or in the trash . o Paper waste *Burning paper waste can cause air pollution *paper waste can be recycled and reused o General rubbish *It can cause water pollution *The local council provides a comprehensive waste collection service for general rubbish. Just contact them for the schedules. 10. What are the automotive workplace procedures for sorting and storing the items listed in the spreadsheet below? Can these be recycled or need to be disposed of? Item Storage and disposal procedure Recyclable? Yes or No Tyres It should be stored off the ground, ideally on a tyre rack, in a cool, dry, clean environment . Keep the it away from any heating or hot water supplies YES Batteries It should be stored in a dry atmosphere and a constant temperature. Before storage, the battery should be fully charged. YES Oil filters It can be stored in any place as long as it is dry area. YES /var/filecabinet/temp/converter_assets/41/d7/41d760bf5453cd41ebef9a4f8c4da66fefb369e7.docx
Coolant Store in a hard-to-reach place with the lid on tight YES Cardboard/Paper Store in atmospheric conditions of between 50 and 70% relative humidity . Extremes of temperature should be avoided. If conditions are comfortable to work in they are normally good for storage. YES General waste It should be securely in sealed, labelled containers ready for disposal. General waste should be stored in secondary containers in a ventilated, cool, and dry area . NO Plastic Store it in a cool and dry place, it should be away from direct light or any place with direct sunlight. Be sure to check for water drips and pipes in your storage location. YES Oil The best place to store oil is in a cool, dark place . Do not store near the store as light and heat can destroy the oil. YES 11. List examples of procedures that can reduce the consumption of the following resources: o Water o Electricity o Fuel o Chemicals Give one example for each and write your answers in the table below. Resources Procedure for reducing consumption Water collect your own water supplies via rainwater collection systems to supplement the mains water you use Electricity Turn off computers and equipment when not in use and at the end of the day. Fuel Encourage employees to take public transportation, take a bike or work remotely. Chemicals Use natural cleaning products such as vinegar (removes mildew and grease) and lemon juice (stain remover, glass cleaner and deodorizer) 12. List five (5) examples of methods used to capture and contain coolants, oils and other fluid spills from vehicles. Always ready a mop and bucket on hand at all times. Use it to clean up small spills Always prepare a suitable absorbent clean up material on hand for larger spills, i.e. spill kits. A supply of fuel/oil clean-up materials should be readily available at all times. /var/filecabinet/temp/converter_assets/41/d7/41d760bf5453cd41ebef9a4f8c4da66fefb369e7.docx
Collect all waste oils in secure, clearly labelled drums or tanks stored in undercover and bunded areas Appoint an EPA approved contractor to remove your waste oil for recycling, treatment, or disposal. 13. There are two (2) different kind of spills kits, Hazchem spill kits and Hydrocarbon spill kits. Explain who uses them, what they are used for and what they usually contain. Insert your information in the table below. Kit Used by Used for Five (5) examples of what they contain Hazchem Spill Kit Workshops Warehouses Fleet maintenance shop Chemical manufacturers Food manufacturers to resist the corrosive and harmful effects of hazardous chemicals. Used to clean up aggressive chemical spills Strong acids Oxidisers Alkali Halogens Ammonia tank Hydrocarbon Spill Kit Medium to large industrial workshops Warehouses transport companies laboratories manufacturers restaurants docks marinas To prevent dangerous hydrocarbons (oils and fuels) from damaging the environment Oils Gasoline Diesel Avgas solvents 14. Explain what a bunding is and list three examples (3) of how a bund can be designed. Bunding is a constructed retaining wall around storage so that any leaks or escapes can be captured easily. Bund your workshop with either impervious concrete hump or flexible rubber hump and check the bunds are sound periodically. Using drip trays to collect liquids and to contain and clean up oil and chemical spills as soon as they occur. Wash vehicles and parts in a bunded and properly functioning wash bay. Use dedicated parts cleaners to wash small parts. 15. Explain how a grease trap works. A grease trap works by slowing down the flow of warm/hot greasy water and allowing it to cool. As the water cools, the grease and oil in the water separate out and float to the top of the trap. The cooler water - minus the grease - continues to flow down the pipe to the sewer. 16. What is a triple inceptor? It is an example of a grease trap. It is a tank installed between a sink and a public sewer to prevent pollution from trade waste such as grease, fat, oil, silt, sand, sludge and other substances entering into the sewer system . /var/filecabinet/temp/converter_assets/41/d7/41d760bf5453cd41ebef9a4f8c4da66fefb369e7.docx

17. What are common causes of air pollutants, such as airborne particles emission, gases, and fumes in the automotive industry? List five (5). Manganese Antiknock agents Asbestos Lead dust Solvents and diesel exhaust fumes 18. List five (5) examples of how the air pollution you listed in Q17 can be managed. Use an exhaust emission control device that reduces toxic gases and pollutants. Workshops that install, maintain, or decommission air conditioners that use ozone-depleting or synthetic gas refrigerants must conform to the requirements and standards detailed in the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations Use alternative fuels Switch the engine off if you are going to be parking for a while. Use electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles. It produce no exhaust emissions when being driven, meaning no impact on local air pollution. 19. List three (3) examples of control measure that can contain and redirect airborne particles, gases and fumes and explain how they work. Air ionizers – it operate by creating negative ions and changing the polarity of airborne particles. By changing polarity, particles magnetically attract together, becoming too large to remain airborne and as a result falling out of a worker's breathing zone. Airflow management - create a negative pressure environment that keeps contaminated air from escaping a room or work area. Filtration system - Fumes from glue and paint, for instance, are often best absorbed by carbon filters. 20. One of the neighbours next to your automotive workshop is complaining about noise from your compressor. What can you do to insulate the noise? List three (3) examples. Place the compressor in a close room or behind a sound dampening wall such as concrete blocks. Install an air intake silencer on your compressor. It is a muffling device that uses tubes or sound-deadening materials to dampen the sound of inrushing air. Place the compressor on a rubber mat to absorb vibrations. /var/filecabinet/temp/converter_assets/41/d7/41d760bf5453cd41ebef9a4f8c4da66fefb369e7.docx
