Exploration 1 . Based on the results of the warm-up for Rolling Down an Incline Plane, answer the following questions in the space below. We are not looking for complicated answers. a) Determine an equation for the ratio of the acceleration of a uniform solid cylinder to the acceleration of a hollow cylinder rolling down the same incline. b) Predict the results of a “rolling race” of a uniform solid cylinder and a hollow cylinder rolling down the same incline: which will arrive at the bottom first, and why? c) Determine an equation for the ratio of the amount of time to roll down an incline for a solid versus a hollow cylinder. d) How does the angle of incline enter into the result?
Exploration 2 . Perform an experiment to test your prediction from Exploration 1, using a shallow (why is shallow better?) inclined plane and the solid and hollow cylinders. First, qualitatively observe how long it takes to roll down the incline for each object, and compare the result to your predictions in Exploration 1. Then, make multiple measurements of the time to roll the same distance and calculate the mean and standard deviation. Summarize your results. To within the experimental uncertainty, do the actual results agree with the mathematical prediction of the ratio?
