Assignment 34 | David Kim | CEE 300 | Dec. 9, 2020 A continuous and aligned fiber-reinforced composite is to be produced consisting of 30 vol% aramid fibers and 70 vol% of a polycarbonate matrix; the mechanical characteristics of the two materials are provided in the table below. Assume that the stress on the polycarbonate when the aramid fibers fail is 45 MPa (6500 psi). For this composite compute: a) the longitudinal tensile strength, and b) the longitudinal modulus of elasticity. Solution: a) The longitudinal tensile strength is calculated: σ c = σ ' m V m + σ f V f , where σ c is the longitudinal tensile strength for aligned continuous fiber composite, σ ' m is the stress in matrix at fiber failure, V m is the volume of matrix, σ f is the tensile strength of fiber, and V f is the volume of fibers. σ c = σ ' m V m + σ f V f = ( 45 MPa ) ( 0.70 ) + ( 3600 MPa ) ( 0.30 ) = 1111.5 MPa = 1.11 GPa Therefore, the longitudinal tensile strength of the composite is 1.11 G Pa
b) The longitudinal modulus of elasticity is calculated: E c = E m V m + E f V f , where E c is the longitudinal modulus of elasticity for aligned continuous fiber composite, E m is the modulus of elasticity of matrix, V m is the volume of matrix, E f is the modulus of elasticity of fiber, and V f is the volume of fibers. E c = E m V m + E f V f = ( 2.4 G Pa ) ( 0.70 ) + ( 131 G Pa ) ( 0.30 ) = 40.98 G Pa≈ 41 GPa Therefore, the longitudinal modulus of elasticity of the composite is 41 GPa
