HIMT 2460 PROJECT This project is done in place of doing a practicum. Due to COVID-19, students are not interning at hos- pitals. Please complete all projects below. You should type your information after each project direc- tion. Project #1: Software Programs Pick from one of the commonly used coding software programs below. 1. 3M Encoder 2. Epic 3. Or pick any EHR or EMR software program Directions: Write a minimum of 500 words explaining the software program. Epic is a privately held healthcare software company. According to the company hospitals that use its software held medical records of 54% of patients in the United States and 2.5% of patients worldwide in 2015. This software was founded in 1979 by Judith R. Faulkner. Epic develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells a proprietary electronic medical records Epic is a cloud based EHR solution catering to different specialities. The software program is in use across a board range of practices from community hospitals to independent practices to multi-specialty hospital groups and hospice care providers. The software program offers the standard range of core EHR features. It has a strong focus on patient en- gagement and facilitating remote care. An extensive patient portal, available as a native app for both Android and iOS operating systems, allows patients more flexibility in managing their healthcare re- quirements. It also emphasizes interoperability and easy integration with third-party systems. More Epic physicians have attested to Meaningful Use Stage 2 than users of any other system, and records can be shared with any EHR that uses these standards. Open.epic - Epic‘s open API - aims to facilitate integra- tion with third-party software and apps. On top of this Epic offers numerous telehealth options - from supporting video visits and post-surgical follow-ups to patient monitoring features. Some of the nations largest prestigious hospitals and health systems use Epic’s system including Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, UCLA Health in Los Angeles, Arling- ton-based Texas Health Resources. Epic EHR systems are some of the most expensive on the market. Duke University Health System reportedly paid $700 million for its Epic system; Kaiser Permanente, $4 billion. Additionally, a Peer60 survey found Epic EHRs come with higher upgrade costs — Epic users spent an additional sum between 40 and 49 percent of the system's initial costs in major and minor up- grades, while Cerner users spent between 30 and 35 percent and Allscripts users spent between 20 and 22 percent. All Epic EHR systems and applications are developed, implemented and supported in-house. Epic garners positive user reviews, and was ranked the No. 1 Overall Software Suite for 2013 by KLAS Re- search. Some tips about Epic is Make sure to log in to the correct department, because the system’s nav- igators are designed for the workflow in each specific area. If you log in to the wrong department, use the Epic button and then click “Change Context” to quickly log in to another department without logging
out of Epic. Use the Chart Search (within a chart, press the control key and spacebar) to quickly search for something in the patient’s chart. To search for an activity or function (in or outside a chart), type a few letters of the name of the activity but don’t press the enter key right away. After a moment, a list of matching Epic activities will pop up. You can also highlight a word with your mouse, right-click and select “Search for Selected Word.” Project #2: Find a Youtube Video Pick from one of the commonly used coding software programs below. 1. 3M Encoder 2. Epic 3. Or pick any EHR or EMR software program Directions: Go to Youtube and find information about the software program. You must do the following: 1. Listen to the video and explain what you learned 2. List the youtube URL 3. Every 5 minute mark, you must type information about the video and what you learned For example: I have chosen to watch a youtubevideo about 3MEncoder. The video can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOaPnWaiXqQ Time Information 5:00 minute mark The video had a small introduction explaining how to work everything that would need to be accessed. It had soft rain music playing in the background. 10:00 minute mark Why are we converting. First reason is because of backchat. Second reason is because of ICD-10 compliance by Oct 1, 2015 because of HIPPA. At the front desk the papers will be filled out by patients and inputed into the system by the front desk workers for the doctor to review 15:00 minute mark During this part of the video she is teaching you how to correctly input all of the information into the software and walking you through it step by step. 20:00 minute mark At the end of the video there was a recap of everything that she went over in the start of the video.
Project #3: Find another Youtube Video Pick from one of the commonly used coding software programs below. 4. 3M Encoder 5. Project #4: Help your family member Your 78-year-old mother is in fairly good health, but does have diabetes and hypertension. She travels out of state several times a year to visit grandchildren. You have been trying to get her to create a PHR, but she is reluctant as her friends have expressed concerns about privacy. In no less than 200 words, defend the creation of a PHR to your mom. A personal health record is simply a collection of information about one’s health. PHR helps you access your information at anytime via web-enabled devices, such as computers, smartphones and tablets. Generally all that goes into your PHR is your doctor’s name and phone numbers. Any allergies that one may have. You will also list your medications and any chronic health problems. You will also need to list any living wills and/or advance directives that one may have. Having a PHR can help save someone’s life because can quickly give first responders any information that one may need to know. PHR follow the in- dustry best practices, such as making their privacy policies public and submitting to monitoring by inde- pendent organizations. In addition, federal laws have been put in place to protect the security of per- sonal health information. Project #5: Patient Registration Information Directions: Find a video, article, or a flyer which discusses patient registration information. You must provide a link or an example of the item.
You must also explain in 100 words, how it is verifies patient registration information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6xSTjvpsJs The first element of the revenue cycle starts with patient registration. If anything is omitted, given incor- rectly by the patient, or entered incorrectly by the front desk the next steps in the cycle will ultimately fail. Registering at a medical office is difficult. Generally, the individuals filling out the registration forms don’t feel well or they are caretakers for the ill patient and their attention is elsewhere. It’s not uncom- mon for items to be skipped and for individuals to get frustrated with the whole process. The goal of the forms is to make for a seamless billing process. Over two thirds of the information submitted on a claim form is given by the patient or guardian during the registration process. If information is left out or illegi- ble, a breakdown in the system occurs. Project #6: Health Record Directions: Compare and contrast health record assembly. Explain 2 different ways a health record can be assembled. Explain 2 different organizations use of the health record. This information should have a minimum of 100 words. The primary purposes are associated directly with the provision of patient care services. They can be classified into the following categories: Patient care delivery, patient care management, patient care support processes, financial and other administrative processes, patient self-management. Medical records can be in electronic format (EHR,EMR,CPR). They can also be assembled in paper format or hy-
brid where some parts of the records are elec- tronic and some paper. The secondary pur- poses are related to the environment in which healthcare services are provided. They are not related directly to specific patient care encoun- ters. Project #7: Organizational Chart Directions: Find the organizational chart for a hospital, nursing home, or any healthcare orga- nization. Place the organizational chart below. You must list the name of the organization and provide information on where you found it. Strong Memorial Hospital Project #8: Confidentiality Directions: Locate the confidentiality rule, policy, or process for a hospital. Explain the process below in a minimum of 100 words. You must list the name of the organization and provide information on where you found it. Samaritan Health Services It is the policy of the facility to respect and protect the privacy rights of patients, their families, employ- ees and third parties. All information (either hard copy, electronic, or verbal) associated with medical records, human resources, performance improvement, quality/risk management, research, financial, or organizational of any kind is strictly confidential and release of information should be directed to the source department for proper release. In addition, any information about the hospital's business, pa- tients, families, employees or third parties which is disclosed or becomes known in the course of an em- ployee's job must be kept confidential. It is the expectation of the hospital that all parties (including but not limited to staff, physicians, volunteers, students, residents, third parties, etc.) thoroughly under- stand that violation of any aspect of this policy will result in corrective action. The hospital places signifi- cant trust in all who have access to sensitive information and with that trust comes a high level of re-

sponsibility. Any breach of these confidentiality rules and expectations listed below is considered ex- tremely serious and may result in the immediate termination of the violator. Project #9: CPC Exam CPC exam preparation Purpose: To prepare for certification with all the information that would be helpful for a new HIMT grad- uate preparing for the CPC exam. This includes information from the AAPC website, include pass rates from the last three years, how to prepare for the exam, the cost, and all other pertinent information on the AAPC website. Document your sources using APA requirements. After you’ve trained with AAPC to become a medical coder—or if you have substantial medical coding experience—you should take the opportunity to gain certification by registering for the CPC test. Passing the CPC exam elevates your earning potential by greater than $20,000 above annual salaries for persons without AAPC's medical coding certification. There are many ways for you to study for the exam you can enroll in the CPC Preparation Course. You can take Supplementary Course. You can also fo practice ex- ams online in order to help practice. So far the CPC exam has a pass rate of 88% . According to the AAPC website you can take the test online or in person. The online test cost is $299 and the in person cost is $399. Project #10: Developing practice CPC exam questions Purpose: To prepare for certification develop 5 multiple choice questions that could appear on the CPC exam. Use any courses you have taken in the HIMT program as your source. Include the answer. The cor- rect answers to your questions should have an asterisk (*). Spelling and grammar count! 1.
