Your assessor will be looking for the following in this assessment task: -
•
Work health and safety (WHS) and occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements relating to using and maintaining measuring equipment, including safe operating procedures for specific measuring equipment
•
Types, uses, limitations and operation of measuring equipment specified in the performance evidence, including:
o
Using metric and imperial units of measurement
o
Using analogue and digital measuring equipment
•
Procedures for selecting measuring equipment suitable to job requirements
•
Identification and tagging procedures for faulty measuring equipment
•
Basic maintenance, adjustment, calibration and storage procedures for measuring equipment.
Assessment
conditions
Assessors MUST
satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessment MUST
include direct observation of tasks.
Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals MUST
provide evidence that links them to the measuring equipment that they have used and maintained,
e.g. repair orders with calculated tolerances.
Assessors MUST
verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.
The following resources MUST
be made available:
•
Automotive repair workplace or simulated workplace
•
Workplace instructions
•
Measuring equipment specified in the performance evidence requiring maintenance
•
Vehicles, components or materials that require the use of automotive measuring

Results/Re-
assessment
•
The Assessor will grade the assessment and record the result on the front page of this document (S) – Satisfactory if all observable behaviours are correct and (NS) not satisfactory if any areas are left incorrect
•
Feedback will be provided on either result
•
Where a student receives a ‘NS – Not Satisfactory’ result, the assessor will discuss the area of the non-compliant observable behaviour and an opportunity given for re- assessment. This may be through direct observation or a different method of assessment e.g. verbal/oral questioning, problem solving exercise.
•
If the outcome is again not satisfactory the student result will be deemed
(NYC) not yet competent. Additional feedback will be given, and a time agreed upon for further assessment after additional training and skills practice has taken place, this information will be recorded, dated and signed in the re-assessment area on the last page of this document
•
Where all the assessment tasks have been graded (S) Satisfactory, the
student will be deemed C – Competent for the practical component and
the result recorded and signed in the area indicated on the last page of
this document
Reasonable
Adjustment
If the participant is unable to undertake the written assessment as designed, an interview (verbal questioning) may be used as an alternate approach.

Which statement is not correct?
A.
Micrometers should be handled carefully.
B.
Micrometers should be left with a gap when not

Micrometers

D. Micrometers need to be checked for accuracy.
9.
Explain the operation of the outside micrometer when measuring an object?
Slip the object between the spindle and anvil of the micrometre. Turn the thimble with your thumb and forefinger
while holding the object against the anvil until the spindle contacts the object. Apply just enough pressure to the
thimble to allow the object to fit between the anvil and spindle. Slip the micrometre back and forth over the object.
until you feel a very light resistance, then rock the tool from side to side to ensure the spindle cannot be closed any
further. After you've made your final adjustments, lock the micrometre and read the reading
10.
Where would you use an inside micrometer?
measure the inside diameter of a bore or hole.
11.
Explain how to use an inside micrometer.
The tool is inserted into the bore and extended until both ends make contact with the bore's surface. Rock the micrometre back and forth and side to side while keeping the anvil firmly against one side of the bore. This places the micrometre in the bore's centre. Before using the tool, ensure that there is adequate resistance on both ends.

What four (4) maintenance activities should be carried out on a micrometer to ensure accuracy?
1
Wipe the spindle's circumference and both measurement faces with a dry, lint-free cloth on a regular basis.
2
Your micrometre may need to be re-calibrated. If your micrometre has been damaged by accident, make sure it is checked for accuracy before collecting measurements.
3
Apply a small amount of multi-purpose oil to the micrometer's exterior with a lint-
free cloth every now and again, or after it has been in storage for a long time, to prevent corrosion and rust.
4
Make sure your micrometre is stored in a well-ventilated, low-humidity environment, ideally at room temper ature.

How do you read a Vernier caliper?
Locate the line on the main scale that corresponds to the zero (0) on the Vernier scale to read the calliper. The reading would be 0.100 inch if the zero on the main scale lined up with the one. Look for
a line on the Vernier scale that does line up with a line on the main scale if the zero on the Vernier scale does not match up exactly with a line on the main scale.

Feeler gauges are hardened steel strips or blades that have been honed to an exact thickness and are marked in m illimetres.
32.
Where can you use feeler gauges to measure on an engine?
A feeler gauge can be used to measure distances such as piston ring side clearance, piston ring end gap, connecti ng rod side clearance, crankshaft end play, and more.
33.
Where would you used round wire feeler gauges?
Spark plug gap is frequently measured with round wire feeler gauges.
The circular gauges are intended to provide a better sense of the gauge's fit in the gap.
34.
Name the following pressure gauges?

38.
Outline briefly how a compression gauge is used?
A compression gauge is a tool that is put into the engine's spark plug hole while the flywheel is rotated. A pressure reading will be produced, which can be used to assess the condition of a cylinder, piston, and rings.
39.
Why would you use an oil pressure gauge to check the oil pressure of an engine?
The status of the oil pump, the pressure regulator, and the complete lubrication system can be
determined by checking the engine's oil pressure. Excessive engine bearing clearances might
result in lower-than-normal oil pressures.
40.
Where is the oil pressure gauge fitted to the engine?
The oil pressure gauge is fitted to the oil gallery in place of the oil pressure sender unit.
41.
What components does a fuel pressure gauge measure on the fuel injection system?

43.
What does a cylinder leak tester test for?
A cylinder leakage test can be used to determine how much compression has been lost and to pinpoint the source of the leak.
44.
How does a cylinder leak tester operate?
A cylinder leakage meter blows compressed air into the spark plug hole of a cylinder with the piston at the top of its bore. The pressure applied to the cylinder is controlled by a pressure regulator in the tester. When pressurised air is released from the cylinder, a gauge measures the percentage of air pressure lost.

Describe the four (4) steps to safety select and use measuring tools in the automotive workplace?
1
Choose the appropriate measurement tool(s) for the job.
2
Check tools before using them to make sure they're in good working order. Remove faulty instruments from service in accordance with workplace procedures.
3
Complete the activity with tools while adhering to manufacturer and workplace procedures. To avoid injury and damage, always use tools safely.
4
After each usage, make sure the tools are clean and in good operating order. Damaged tools should be reported and tagged, and they should be removed from service according to working standard
48.
What is Lockout/Tagout?

49.
What care is needed with precision measuring equipment?
Micrometers and other precision measuring devices, in particular, are very sensitive to harsh handling.
They should be cleaned before and after each usage. To avoid measuring something that has contracted due to cold or heat, all measurements should be done on pieces that are at room temperature. Because it was heated, it had expanded.

A chemistry graduate student is designing a pressure vessel for an experiment. The vessel will contain gases at pressures up to 470.0 MPa. The student's
design calls for an observation port on the side of the vessel (see diagram below). The bolts that hold the cover of this port onto the vessel can safely withstand
