In addition to conducting the reconnaissance, you must prepare a tunnel overlay symbol and complete and submit DD Form 3012. Conduct a Tunnel Reconnaissance Overview:  A tunnel reconnaissance is typically conducted as part of a route or road classification or to support general engineer activities. The information collected during the reconnaissance is used to complete DD Form 3012, and to prepare an overlay symbol identifying the limiting characteristics. Combat Engineer Squad Leaders are responsible for conducting the reconnaissance.
