Selection Project: Basic Concepts Team Project: Students may work in groups up to 3 on this project, turn in one project with all names on it Base Rate and Selection Ratios Use the High School (HSGPA) and College GPA data (below) and graph them on the supplied grid. The 12 people in your file are your total applicant group. These are the people who applied to your college. Normally we would not have their college GPAs (they are applying to go to college after all). For this example we are assuming that we know how well they will, in fact, do. Answer the following questions. If we have to admit 3 people to fill our roster what is the selection ratio? SR= 0.25 Assume that all 12 went to our college. If we think that a college GPA of 2.5 or higher is acceptable, what is our base rate for acceptable performance? Base rate= 66.67% Assume that we have a selection ratio of 1 in 6 (.17), which students would we accept with top down selection using the only available predictor (HSGPA)? Jane and Frank Assume that we admitted 8 students using HSGPA as our predictor. Assume we think that a college GPA of 2.5 or higher is acceptable performance, how many correct decisions did we make? 7 correct decisions
How many incorrect decisions did we make? 1 If we have a selection ratio of .25 what is the average performance of the selected group for this applicant group? Average performance= 3.85 If we couldn’t use HS GPA as a predictor and we had a selection ratio of .5, on the average, what would the average performance of the selected group be? Average performance= 3.575 If we have a selection ratio of 1.0 what is the average performance of the selected group? Average performance= 3.05
Average perf. = 2.64 Correlation between HSGPA and College GPA = . 69
