SETTING PROFESSIONAL GOALS FOR MATHEMATICS TEACHING AND LEARNING
It is important for teachers to understand the standards they are instructed to teach. The
Georgia math standards have been updated for the 2023-2024 school year. My school district
helped each teacher to be more prepared for these changes by having a Professional Learning
Day where all grade levels from all schools were able to meet and discuss the changes in the
mathematical standards. During this PL, educators were allowed to ask questions, compare the
old and new standards, and write down things they like about the new standards. After this
learning time, I felt at ease about reviewing and teaching a new set of mathematical standards for
the 2023-2024 school year.
After reviewing the professional standards given in the resources, I found that one
standard I am confident in is Standard 4, Mathematical Learning Environment (NCTM, 2012). In
my classroom, I try to make math time fun and inviting to my Kindergarteners. Together we play
games, draw problems on the board, and sing songs to help remember the standards being taught.
Every week I plan to have one game day that reviews the material being taught. This is my
student’s favorite day of the week because they are learning and playing a game together. An
area in the standards that I need to further develop would be content pedagogy (NCTM, 2012). I
am a first-year teacher so something that I struggle with is creating lessons for each standard.
When creating my lesson plans, I ask my team members and academic coach questions on what
is important to focus on and what are some ways that I can teach the standard. Something that I
would love to work on is understanding and creating fun and educational lesson plans to share
with my team members. One way I can do this is by reviewing our new math standards and
thinking of activities before the next school year.
There are two main SMART goals that I have set for myself after reviewing the material
from the assignment. Smart Goal 1: Starting on May 26, 2023, to August 7, 2023, I will have
three mathematical standards reviewed from our new standards with activities to share with my
grade level team. This will benefit myself and my team by creating new ways to teach standards
and to give a head start to the school year. One way I plan to achieve this goal is by creating a
word document with each standard attached and at least 3 activities we could use for the
standards. Smart Goal 2: Starting August 7, 2023, to May 5, 2024, I will attend 2 math
professional learning days. This will benefit myself by gaining more knowledge from the district
and other educators in teaching math standards to my students. I plan to accomplish this goal by
signing up for any math related meetings that are available during professional learning days.
