Examine the teacher’s role in supporting learning, improving planning and practice, upholding professional expectations, and collaboratively advancing the profession. [InTASC 9(a), 9(c), 9(n), 9(o), 10(r), 10(s); ISTE 1(d), 5(d)] 3. Identify the effect of potential biases on teaching and learning to evaluate practice and develop professionally, according to expectations of the profession. [InTASC 9(e), 9(g), 9(i), 9(k), 9(o)] 4. Reflect on one’s own professional dispositions related to education. [InTASC 9(o); ISTE 5(c)] 5. Explain the concept of academic integrity. Topic 3 DQ1 Review the Examples of Policy Violations in the Student Success Center. Think about how these types of situations might arise during your academic career. As a graduate level student and master in your field, why is it important to uphold academic honesty? What are some of the consequences of not abiding by GCU’s academic policies? Academic integrity entails being truthful, ethical, and meticulous in academic work, while academic dishonesty undermines integrity. It's essential to uphold intellectual honesty by avoiding any form of cheating, copying, or fabrication of others' work as your own. Academic institutions strictly prohibit such dishonesty. As a graduate-level student, maintaining academic integrity is crucial. This is because it fosters a culture of truth and knowledge-seeking among peers and enhances the credibility of the academic community. As per Grand Canyon University's (2023) guidelines for academic integrity, in cases where a student's violation directly impacts their coursework, they may be asked to revise their assignment, receive partial credit for certain aspects, or potentially receive no credit at all. In cases where the Code of Conduct Committee deems the violation severe, university-level penalties may be imposed on the student. These penalties may range from receiving a failing grade for the assignment or course to being removed from the class and potentially even facing suspension or expulsion. Grand Canyon University. Topic 3 DQ 2 In this topic you will be introduced to an Action Plan to ensure you are aware of your state teaching requirements. This assignment will be due in Topic 6 to give you the time needed to collect specific information. In order to prepare for that assignment, explore your state's department of education website to learn more about the requirements of becoming a certified teacher. Share the link for your state's department of education and briefly discuss the requirements for certification or endorsement for your subject area. Can you identify any deficiencies you may have? If you are a certified teacher already, explain the purpose for pursuing this program of study. Are there any additional licensure steps or credentialing steps you need to take? Explain. To become a certified secondary teacher, the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) requires the completion of a teacher preparation program or a minimum of two years of teaching experience in addition to coursework/training. Also, teaching aspirants must pass Professional Knowledge and Subject Knowledge Exams or fulfill alternative qualifications as specified. There are multiple reasons why I have decided to pursue my graduate studies. As I mentioned in our Discussion Forum, it has been over a decade since I was last in school, and I feel that now is an opportune time to revisit student life and reignite my passion for teaching. Additionally, I am interested in updating my credentials as I currently only hold a degree in elementary Math education, despite teaching secondary Math. Furthermore, as I have held leadership positions at school, obtaining an administrative certificate would be beneficial. Ultimately, my goal is to advance my career in either administrative roles or postsecondary teaching. Arizona Department of Education. Professional Dispositions: Survey and Video Dispositions are the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward students, families, colleagues, and communities and affect student learning, motivation, and development as well as the educator’s own professional growth. Part 1: Dispositions Self-Assessment Survey After reviewing the “Professional Dispositions of Learners,” complete Part 1 of the "Dispositions Self-Assessment Survey and Video Link" template by checking the corresponding box to rank how you currently value each disposition on a scale from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. Part 2: Video Submission Based on your understanding of your own dispositions, respond to the following questions in a 3-5 minute video submission: What is the teacher’s role in supporting learning, improving planning and practice, upholding professional expectations, and collaboratively advancing the profession? What dispositions do you currently possess will make you a successful teacher? What dispositions do you need to work on before you enter the classroom as a first-year teacher? What effect could personal biases have on teaching and learning? According to the expectations of the profession, how should biases be taken into perspective? Reflecting on your own professional dispositions related to education, explain how you will uphold and adhere to academic and professional integrity as a teacher candidate, and as a future teacher. Show professionalism in your speech and appearance. Use an online video platform such as Loom, YouTube, or Vimeo to upload your completed video. Be sure that others can access and view your linked video prior to submitting. Copy and paste your video link onto your completed “Dispositions Self-Assessment Survey and Video” template.

You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Professional Teaching Standards Part I: Researching Professional Standards Effective teachers analyze professional teaching standards and utilize academic standards to inform their professional responsibilities and to design appropriate curriculum. To prepare you for a career in teaching, and to support you in completing the assignments for this topic, review the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards, as well as any specialized professional association (SPA) standards (e.g., Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)). Here is a list of SPAs: American Council on the Teaching of a Foreign Language (ACTFL) National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) National Association of Music Educators (NAME) Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Part II: Professional Standards Presentation For you to become more familiar with the professional standards for teaching, as well as specialized standards for content areas (e.g., special education, English, math, science), create a PowerPoint (12-15 slides), then use a screen cast software, such as Loom, YouTube or Vimeo, to present your information as a virtual professional development. Your presentation will showcase the following information: Compare the InTASC standards with the SPA standard most relevant to your future profession to identify at least two common themes. Explain how these themes
are represented in each standard set and how they relate to the knowledge, skills, and values of effective teachers. Describe how each set of standards addresses professional collaboration and data- driven instructional decision-making. According to the expectations of the profession, as expressed within the InTASC standards, describe how teachers are expected to assume the responsibilities of improving practice and advancing the profession. Submit the PowerPoint file with the link to the visual/audio portion of the presentation on the Title slide. At least 2-4 scholarly sources, outside of the standards, are required. While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. NCTM Standards 1. Knowing and understanding mathematics (4) 2. Knowing and using mathematical processes (4,5) 3. Knowing students and planning for mathematical learning (1,2,3,7,8) 4. Teaching meaningful mathematics (5,8) 5. Assessing impact on student learning (6,8) 6. Social and professional context of mathematics teaching and learning (1,9,10)
Action Plan: State Specific Certification Requirements This program was built to provide you with the pedagogical content needed to teach at the secondary level (Grades 6-12). However, the requirements are aligned to meet certification criteria for the state of Arizona. Therefore, you may need additional requirements based on the state where you plan to teach, in order to obtain certification. The purpose of this assignment is to help you outline your state's requirements, recognize any deficiencies, and create an action plan so you are prepared to teach in the content area(s) at the secondary level in the state where you plan to teach. Use the "Action Plan State Specific Certification Requirements" document to record your found information. This assignment will not be due until the end of your course. It is provided early for you to have the time to gather the necessary information needed.
