Hello Professor , The use of manipulatives can support a student with dyscalculia because they help visualize and comprehend math concepts in a way in which it seems realistic. When using manipulatives like blocks, coins , marbles , and other familiar items makes math seem less abstract. Using this hands-on approach to learning about math concepts students can also get a perspective on exactly how the process affects the numbers and how problems are solved. An example of a number sense activity that includes the use of manipulatives to support students who struggle in math would be a number sense activity (Hodnett, 2024). Students will be provided with small objects like buttons or small blocks and a number line. Students will place objects on number lines as use them as counters to follow along. Student will be given a math problem like 2+3=, they will place a object on 2 and then add three more to get the solution. Hodnett, Brendan, (2024). more concrete way. Objects like blocks, coins, and manipulatives can help make math problems less abstract . How do manipulatives help students with disabilities? Manipulatives can help students understand mathematical concepts and procedures , instead of just relying on rote memorization. Manipulatives can include number lines, tiles, plastic or paper coins/bills, shapes, fraction strips, base-10 blocks, geo-boards, polystrips, counters (beans, coins, etc.).
