Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students For this assessment, I decided to pick two of the four new scales for rating the behavioral characteristics of superior students to compare my two first grade students who are in the process for being tested for gifted. I chose to assess on Mathematics Characteristics and Reading Characteristics, since they are the most heavily weighted content areas in first grade. The two students I assessed for the new scales are K.D. (African American female) and I.L. (Hispanic male). To start, I observed each student in the classroom and used my knowledge on these students to complete these assessments, and then I focused on completing math and reading for K.D. and then math and reading for I.L. Next, I compared the results for K.D. and I.L. for Mathematics Characteristics and then the same with Reading Characteristics. The results from Mathematics Characteristics for both students were higher than the results for Reading Characteristics. K.D. scored 53 (88%) on Mathematics and I.L. scored 49 (82%) on Mathematics. The results from the Reading Characteristics showed I.L. scored 33 (92%) while K.D. scored 29 (81%). It was interesting that the opposite student scored higher on Reading Characteristics than Mathematics Characteristics. I believe that these results show that K.D. would do better in a gifted program centered on a math focus than she would in a gifted program with a reading focus. It also shows that I.L. would do better in a gifted program centered on a reading focus than he would in a gifted program with a math focus. I am not sure if the scores/percentages they received based on behavioral characteristics are appropriate ratings for students that are considered gifted in the programs for the content areas of reading and mathematics.
Although both students perform high in both reading and math content areas, this gives me a better understanding of the similarities and differences they have when it comes to behavioral characteristics of reading and mathematics. It also makes me curious as to what these students would have scored in the remaining two scales of science and technology and what these results would mean for these students in the Scholastic Academy program they are currently enrolled in at our school.
