Pennies Post-Lab Assignment Each student will submit her/his own post-lab assignment . I encourage students to talk to each other when working on the post-lab. But each student must generate her/his own tables, graphs, and answer written questions in her/his own words. Please complete your lab report in a Microsoft Word document by answering the questions listed below. You do not have to retype the questions in your report. You can highlight or change the font color for your answers Graphs should be generated in Microsoft Excel and copy-pasted in your Word document. At the top of the lab report write: Your name, Date of experiment, CHEM110, Experiment Title Then, answer the following questions: 1. Create Table 1 in your Word document. Calculate the total mass of the pennies and report your answer in the table. 2. Create Table 3 in your Word document. In Table 3, report the initial volume of the water in the graduated cylinder (volume can be read by watching the lab video), and calculate the volume of the pennies. 3. Calculate the density of your pennies. In one brief sentence, compare this density to the value of copper given in the literature: 8.96 g/cm 3 . 4. Construct a graph of Table 2 lab data using Microsoft Excel. One suggestion for a graph could be to plot year of each penny on the x-axis and mass on the y-axis. Copy-paste your graph into your Word document. What conclusions can you make about your pennies? In 2-4 sentences describe a hypothesis that could be made for your results. 5. Create Table 4 in your Word document. In Table 4, report the length of the blue cylinder using Rulers A and B, and report the volume of the liquid in the provided graduated cylinder. 6. If the “actual” length of this blue cylinder is 6.59 cm, which ruler is more precise? Which measurement has less uncertainty (is more accurate)? Explain in 2-4 sentences. 7. Suppose the area of a rectangle (length x width) was calculated using the length from Ruler A and the width from Ruler B. How many significant figures would be correct to report in the calculated area? Explain your answer in 2-4 sentences. 8. A student determines the density of an unknown liquid by weighing a sample of known volume. The reported density is found by the instructor to be significantly higher than it should be. Which of the following experimental errors could account for this result? Choose a, b, or c below, and then explain your decision in 1-3 sentences. a. The volume of liquid in the graduated cylinder was higher than the student read. b. The balance was read incorrectly, and the recorded sample mass was lower than the true sample mass. c. A part of the same was spilled from the graduated cylinder before it was weighed. When complete, save your Word document, then, upload your saved document to the Pennies Lab submission page in Canvas
