Introduction to the Total Station Lab 5
CE 211 /Fall 2023
Todd Saladin
Lab 5 Questions:
1.
Insert a picture of your notes; or create them using tables or excel. The picture must be readable to receive full credit.
2.
Calculate the angular closure error of the polygon. (show calculations) In the notes.
3.
Does your data meet the ALTA / ACSM standard for angle closure? Does it meet KAR for Rural and Urban surveys? (Show calculations) Done in the notes. The data does not meet the ALTA/ACSM standard for angle closure. It also does not meet KAR for Rural and Urban surveys.
4.
Balance the angles? (do not add precision that is not given in the original angles) (show calculations) Done in the notes.

5.
Calculate the elevations of stake A and stake C; show all calculations. Done in the notes.
6.
The total station measures 2 values directly; what are they? The total station directly measures the zenith angle and slope distance. The zenith angle is the angle between the vertical and the direction of the shot taken by the total station. The slope distance is the measured distance from the total station to the prism, this is the hypotenuse of the triangle that the total station uses to calculate vertical and horizontal distance.
7.
The total station can measure a 3
rd
value directly but what needs to be done? Explain. The total station can measure horizontal angle as well, but it must be referenced to a point otherwise the angle is meaningless. This is done by shooting a point and then physically setting the horizontal angle in the total station to zero and then rotating the total station to the next point, and the total station will measure the resulting angle between the points.
8.
How is the Height of instrument determined? It is found by measuring, with a measuring tape, from the ground to the measure mark on the total station.
9.
What is the prism constant for the prism used in lab and why is it used? The prism constant used in the lab is 30mm, and it is used because when light enters the prism it is refracted around inside the prism and doesn’t pass through the center of the prism, so the 30mm input allows the total station to account for the difference.
10.
Temperature and pressure can be entered into the total station instrument; what is this information used for? This information is entered into the total station instrument so that it can make accurate measurements that account for those external factors in the survey.
