Lesson Plan #8 Date: March 1, 2017 Time: 11:55 - 12:35 Subject Area: Math → 3 by 1 Digit Multiplication Goal/Outcome: To identify and reinforce the multiplication facts that she has previously learned and to use them for 3 by 1 digit multiplication. Through various multiplication activities she will demonstrate her current knowledge of multiplication facts. Behavioural Objective(s): Janie will complete 3 by 1 digit multiplication with 80% accuracy. Materials/Resources: Pencil Eraser Computer/iPad Worksheet Whiteboard 4 colored dry-erase markers Instructional Environment: IRT Classroom Procedure: We will start with our usual chat and making some general conversation. We will review and practice the multiplication strategies that she has previously learnt through reviewing her multiplication lapbook. Then we will continue by continuing by reviewing 3 by 1 digit multiplication that she started yesterday by explaining the concept and modelling using the whiteboard and 4 different colored
markers to do an example together the same way that it was introduced in the previous lesson by using a whiteboard and 4 different colored markers (see image below); black will be used for the equation or multiplication sentence, green will show the first step, red will show the second step and blue will be used for the third step. In the example below that I modelled (321 x 2) for the student you must multiply 2 x 1 and regroup if necessary. Then you must multiply 2 x 2 and regroup if necessary. Lastly, 2 x 3 and add the number if it was carried over. Then we will continue with the worksheet on 3 by 1 digit multiplication to focus on the objective that we started yesterday. I will stress the importance of lining up the numbers neatly. Once the worksheet is completed she will reinforce her 3 by 1 digit multiplication with an online activity. In this activity Janie will be presented with a 3 by 1 digit multiplication equation. She will have to work out the answer and type in the answer using the keyboard. The game keeps track of the number of questions attempted and the number of correct answers. It also displays the correct answer if the
answer inputted is incorrect. The game can be found at the link below. http://www.mathplayground.com/multiplication04.html Evaluation: The multiplication worksheet that Janie completed during the lesson will be placed in her math folder to be used as a summative evaluation. The information obtained through that assessment will help steer the remainder of the lessons. Direct observations, and anecdotal notes will also be used during the progress of the lesson, such as the number of questions attempted and the number correct during the online activity.

Lesson Plan Reflection Personal Delivery Strengths: Built rapport with student. Provided student with a breaks during this lesson. In between worksheet and game Janie could go for a short walk (2-3 min). Allowed Janie more time to respond to my questions/prompts. Needs: Instructional Methods and Materials Strengths: Lesson was a continuation of previous lesson. Janie did not finish the 3 by 1 digit multiplication worksheet from the last lesson, so it was finished today. Janie enjoys technology and her iPad, so I incorporated an interactive activity that she could use on her Ipad. Used a variety of activities to engage Janie and appeal to the various types of learning. Reviewed the multiplication strategies that she has learned and incorporated them into each lesson. Needs: Provide Janie with more direct instruction. Student Response / Reaction: Positives: Janie very much enjoys coming out with me. Janie also likes to use her iPad. Janie was very engaged during the whiteboard activity. She could verbally tell me each step that I needed to do and couldn’t wait to do it herself. Janie can identify various multiplication strategies and use them correctly about 90% of the time. Negatives: While Janie is usually always eager, she was not as energetic today but still engaged. This could be due to a virus going around school causing headaches and fevers. Stated “this is easy” and did not focus. She rushed through her worksheet and I had to get her to revisit some questions.
Implications for Lesson Planning: In the future, I will continue to review her multiplication facts and strategies during each lesson. At this point she can identify her multiplication facts with about 95% accuracy. I will ensure that I use planned breaks and visual schedules. Personal / Professional Reflection: With each lesson I am seeing improvement in Janie’s multiplication facts and her ability to do multi-digit multiplication. If she is meeting with success and finding the activity easy she loses focus, I need to plan for this or switch activities. In regards to my professionalism, I have discovered that I am very patient, and dedicated and walk away each day learning something new about both myself and Janie.
