Field Experience Reflection Tetyana Anderson University of Phoenix Shannon Salomon 11/21/2023
Field Experience Reflection I completed my field experience at Dubois Integrity Academy. This charter school is in Riverdale, Georgia and has a 98% minority demographic. Mrs. Spencer allowed me to complete this experience with her 1 st grade classroom. The lesson plan that Mrs. Spencer provided was essential to my success in teaching the small group that she had chosen for me. The content standards and learning objectives were clearly stated, and this allowed me to effectively facilitate learning. The materials that were necessary for the lesson were identified and useful in helping the students visualize the math concepts. The standard of focus was Standard(s): 1.NR.2: Explain the relationship between addition and subtraction and apply the properties of operations to solve real-life addition and subtraction problems within 20. Mrs. Spencer incorporated money to add in the real-world significance of being able to add and subtract. The only flaw in the lesson plan was the lack of differentiation for the students. There are many gifted students in this class, and they are not always challenged beyond what they already know. There are also students who perform below grade level, but they are expected to complete the same assignments as those who are grade-level proficient. I had the opportunity to work with a small group of gifted students. I taught Lesson 4 which introduced the students to a number line. In our small group, I was able to discuss the uses of number lines and connect one of those uses to money. I asked Mrs. Spencer if could challenge the gifted students by incorporating pennies, nickels, and dimes into the lesson. She agreed and
the students learned and were able to evaluate and compare the values of the coins by adding and subtracting using the number line. The most exciting part of teaching this portion of the lesson was being able to connect the content standard to real-world scenarios. Many of the kids revealed that they had piggy banks and were excited to go home and add up the coins they had collected. This added a level of engagement that kept them interested in discovering more. I would not say that there was any level of difficulty for me in teaching this lesson. Everything that I needed was provided to me and the students were interested in the subject and grasped it rather quickly. I learned that incorporating real life into the lesson is an effective teaching strategy. When students can relate to the content, or have some background knowledge, they are more engaged and willing to overcome the challenges of learning new concepts. Gong forward I will be sure to incorporate engaging and relatable concepts into my teaching practices.
