Data Project Assignment Handout
MAT 120 – Probability and Statistics
PURPOSE
•
For this assignment, you will collect a set of data, perform calculations to find appropriate Descriptive Statistics, and create appropriate graphs and tables. You will be creating a project that will incorporate the following Course Competencies:
•
Compare data
•
Compute the statistics for a set of data
•
Create appropriate graphs
Completing this project will show you the steps involved in a real-world application of Statistics which could be beneficial by gaining an understanding of how data is collected and calculated to better interpret news or other sources of information. This project will count 15% of the overall grade for the course.
This is a
cornerstone project, which
is a multi-faceted assignment that serves as a foundational (academic and intellectual) experience for you at the beginning of your academic program.
TASK
Final Data Project - due April 16,2023
and is worth point 90% of project grade
You will be selecting a product and collecting data to perform a variety of statistical calculations. Your Final Data Project will be a compilation of all your work beginning with your raw data and ending with your predictions. You will complete this project in three steps as follows.
•
Step 1
•
You will collect data using at least 10 different packs of a product that can be sorted by shape or color (Qualitative Data) and create frequency tables and relative frequency tables. You will need to make a picture of the sorted data for each pack.
•
You will create bar graphs and circle graphs for each pack using the frequency tables you created in “a”.
•
You will combine all of the data from all of the packs and create a Frequency Table, Bar Graph and circle graphs for the combined data.
•
Item a will be turned in for a progress check on February 5, 2023
. Items b and c will be turned in for progress check 2 on March 12,2023.
•
Step 2
•
You will select one color or shape and you will use the numbers you got in Step 1
as Quantitative Data to calculate the mean, median, mode, range, IQR, standard deviation, and variance of the collected data for the shape or color selected. •
You will also determine the five-number-summary and construct a box plot using
this data.
•
You will make a Histogram of this data and identify the type of distribution. (Just skewness)
I will do an optional progress check the week of
April 9, 2023
to work out any kinks before you turn it in.
•
Step 3
Complete your Data Project by compiling all of your work and turn it in. Please make a cover sheet and write a brief introduction (See Power Point). Be sure your work is in order. Please submit your work as a “Word” document in Black Board.
Reflections - due March 12 and April 16 are worth 5% of project grade each
You will do two reflections during this project. One will be completed half way through the project and one at the completion of the project. Final Project is due April 16, 2023
.
