Determining Impact on Learners

I watched Video One, Using Stock Market Simulation to Work with Fractions and Decimals. It is a sixth-grade single-subject class of gifted students. The content is math, working with fractions and decimals. The activity is a stock market simulation to allow the students to see
the connections between fractions and decimals. Students are in five-person groups to work together.
I watched Video Three, Developing the Skills to Do Scientific Inquiry. This is a kindergarten class sitting on the floor as a group. They are learning about Scientific Inquiry using
seed growth for their investigation. The activity is to count the leaves and measure the plant. Students are working in small groups on the floor.
I watched Video Four, Analyzing, Interpreting, and Judging Artworks by the Works Progress Administration. This is a fifth-grade class with a mix of gifted and challenged students. Student activity to interpret and judge the provided artwork. Students are in groups of four to five at each table.

In Video One, the teacher is seen moving around the classroom using the high-leverage practice of checking students understanding during the lesson. The teacher asks questions to make sure that they have an understanding of the subject. The teacher asks the students what their knowledge of the lesson is and to talk about it among the other students in their group.
In Video Three, the teacher uses the high-leverage practice of selecting and designing formal assessments. The teacher has each student present their finding from their Scientific

Inquiry to the entire class. The students must explain how they conducted their inquiry and what the results were. The teacher uses this presentation to do a formal assessment of each student in the class. By asking the students questions, the teacher can gauge how well they understood the assignment.
In Video Four, the teacher uses the high-leverage practice of providing oral feedback to the students. The teacher roams around the room, engaging each group of students. The teacher asks if they need help or have any questions. The teacher assists and guides the students to find the answers to the questions. He provides verbal feedback by stating that they already have answered some questions as a group.

Checking students' understanding during the lesson helps the students learn. This allows the teacher to assist the students to determine their level of understanding. The teacher can also encourage learning by helping and guiding students when needed.
Designing a formal assessment allows the teacher to gauge the level of understanding a student has. It is also a critical tool for the teacher in determining how many students need additional support or if the class is ready to move on to the next part of the subject.
Providing oral and written feedback is a critical, high-leverage practice for a teacher. It allows a teacher to encourage a student to do well and guide a struggling student. It shows that the teacher is there to support the student's learning needs while also reassuring the student that they are doing it correctly.

For the kindergarten class doing the Scientific Inquiry lesson, I would have had all the students provide a presentation or at least group some of them. This would allow all the teacher to evaluate every student and not just the few that were chosen. Feedback could be provided verbally as praise to the class for being successful in learning how to use a ruler correctly and being able to come to a conclusion using the Scientific Method.
A3b.
One change I would have done was to have visual examples of the plant for them to see and touch. Have a display of the plant from seedling to total growth. This would allow the students to gauge where in development there was by using their ability to compare it to another plant. This would also allow the students to see what their plant will look like when it is fully grown and not just a trunk. Give them anticipation and a desire to keep watering and growing their plant.
