I n this module discussion, you will take on the role of Susan, a high school principal. She is planning on having a large movie night for the high school. She has received a lot of feedback on which movie to show and sees differences in movie preferences by gender and also by grade level. She knows if the wrong movie is shown, it could reduce event turnout by 50%. She would like to maximize the number of students who attend and would like to select a PG-rated movie based on the overall student population's movie preferences. Each student is assigned a classroom with other students in their grade. She has a spreadsheet that lists the names of each student, their classroom, and their grade. Susan knows a simple random sample would provide a good representation of the population of students at their high school, but wonders if a different method would be better. Use this data to help complete the Module One discussion in Brightspace. Grade Level # of Classrooms Total Students Male Female 9 th 10 200 100 100 10 th 12 250 150 100 11 th 13 250 100 150 12 th 15 300 150 150 Total 50 1000 500 500 Introduce yourself and describe a time when you used data in a personal or professional decision. This could be anything from analyzing sales data on the job to making an informed purchasing decision about a home or car. Describe to Susan how to take a sample of the student population that would not represent the population well. Describe to Susan how to take a sample of the student population that would represent the population well. Finally, describe the relationship of a sample to a population and classify your two samples as random, cluster, stratified, or convenience. Hello! My name is Dianne and the last time I used data was to show the prevalence of homicide in California compared to the United States. I teach a rehabilitation class at my place of work called, Victim’s Impact. I often will utilize data from the Federal Bureau of Investigations website to allow the men in my classes an easy to ready snip-it of just how much a crime occurs and what it costs victims, communities, and our country. I am typically able find pie charts, graphs, and tables that show this type of data. Susan, There are a number of ways in which you can take a sample from the students, and I will share with you two of them. The first way, a convenience sample. You could take a convenience sample by including only males in the 9 th grade. Given the range of maturity levels in this school, and that there are two genders represented, choosing a movie based on the likes and dislikes of 9 th grade boys will surely turn other boys and girls away from participating. I would suggest taking a stratified sample for the best results. A stratified sample would consist of choosing a percentage of each grade level and each gender. This way, the sample will get greater coverage of maturity levels and genders. When choosing a movie, you may just be able to choose one that most high school girls and boys would consider watching.
