Name: ________________________________ Date: _______________ MTH 116 Foundations of Quantitative Literacy Presentation Assignment 8C: Real Population Growth Use data you find online to respond to the following items. Cite the page or pages where you obtain this information by including a citation list at the end of your presentation which includes the site’s URL and page title. 1. Provide, in visual format, any data, tables, or charts you use during the creation of your presentation. Tables, charts, and items listed below should all be present in a powerpoint presentation you will make for the class. Tables and charts should be detailed and informative and not be ‘slapdash’ creations. 2. World population is rising by about 80 million people per year. About how many people are added to the global population each day? each hour? Show your calculations. 3. If the value in item #2 represents an annual growth rate of 1.1%, determine both the approximate and exact doubling times of the Earth’s population. Show your calculations. 4. Do a little research and determine three factors that impact the Earth’s carrying capacity. Provide citations with URLs and site names of the pages you visit to determine this information. 5. If the Earth’s 2017 population was 7.5 billion, and the population of the Earth is growing at 1.1% annually, determine when the population will exceed a projected carrying capacity of 11 billion people. 6. Discuss what overshoot and collapse of the human population would mean, in terms of the definition of the phrase, and speculate, based on your answers so far, when this is at risk of occurring. 7. If researchers project the human population will level out at 11 billion later in this century, what type of growth are they assuming? 8. Using the logistic growth formula, create a table showing the logistic growth rate for each population benchmark value of 500 million people, beginning at the 2017 value of 7.5 billion people. Do this up to a carrying capacity value of 11 billion and a population of 11 billion. Use the base growth rate of 1.1% previously cited. 9. Discuss the values in your table from item #8 and, in a paragraph, discuss what is happening to the global population’s growth as the population begins to approach 11 billion. 10. The 1960 growth rate for the global population was 2.8%. Determine how long it would take, at that rate, to reach a global population of 11 billion. 11. Had the 1960 global population growth rate remained constant, until now, what would the projected population of the world be in 2021, and what would this mean for a global carrying capacity of 11 billion? Discuss what might occur, or have occurred already, had the global population growth rate not gotten lower over the course of time.
