EDU 293 Lesson 9 1. Lesson Participation Assignment a. Purpose of Assessment: Explain the purposes for assessment in the classroom. There are many types of assessments a teacher can give students in the classroom. Each kind of assessment has a different purpose. The overall purpose of an assessment is to evaluate our students’ proficiency levels and to see how effective our instruction is. The seven purposes given in our lesson are: 1. To assist in student learning- using an assessment will help us find out where the student has gaps or what areas needs more assistance. 2. To identify students' strengths and weaknesses- using an assessment will help teachers find out the areas a student is most comfortable in and the areas where they need some more guidance. 3. To assess the effectiveness of a particular instructional strategy- we can also use assessments to find out how effective our teaching is going. By doing this it allows us to make changes/adjustments where necessary. 4. To assess and improve the effectiveness of curriculum programs 5. To assess and improve teaching effectiveness 6. To provide data that assists in decision making about a student's future 7. To provide data in order to communicate with and involve parents in their children's learning- assessments are a big part of data collecting. Assessments allow us to show and communicate with parents on how their children are doing. b. Formative vs. Summative Assessment: Define formative and summative assessment. Give two examples of each for the mathematics classroom. Formative assessments are check for understandings during a lesson. This type of assessment is mainly for the teacher to see how many students are understanding the lesson and if any adjustments need to be made. 2 examples of a formative assessment are: thumbs up/thumbs down and ticket out the door. Summative Assessments are the end of a unit tests to see if the students have mastered the standard or not. 2 examples of summative assessments are: Research Papers and state assessments. c. Types of Assessment: List four types of assessments that you could use in the mathematics classroom. Explain what type of information you would hope to gather from the assessments about your students' learning
Four types of assessments that I would use in the Mathematics classroom are: multiple types of formative assessments, unit summative assessments, student portfolios, quizzes. During my math lesson I would try to get at least 3 or 4 formative assessments in whether it be thumb up/ thumbs down, an online quiz like kahoot.com, and white board questions. These little check for understandings help me guide and figure out how my lesson is going. I would also do unit assessments, these are test my students will do independently so I can see if they have mastered the standard. The data I collect from my unit tests allow me to see if I have to reteach the standard as a whole group or if it is a small amount of students that need some additional guidance I would just pull a small group. Students portfolios is one of the best ways to show parents student growth. As teachers we need to recognize that not all students learn the same way and are not all at the same level. By showing parents portfolios, they can see the progression from where they started to where they are at currently. Lastly traditional quizzes, I give quizzes every Friday to see where my students are at when it comes to standards. My quizzes go over what I have taught so far, most of the time I include past lesson questions as well so students don’t forget past material.
