2B Student Observation Critical Thinking Form EDU293 Mathematics Techniques and Methods Throughout your Field Experience, take notes on the questions listed below. Complete this form by clicking within the Click or tap here to enter text. section located below each question. Save the file as your_name_Form 2B . Upload this completed file to your instructor using the assignment link posted in your course. 1. Describe how the teacher uses appropriate strategies and resources to adapt instruction to the needs of individuals and groups of learners. (InTASC 8(a)) The teacher I observed used many assessments to quickly adapt to the needs of her students. She frequently used many formative assessments to see if her students were understanding the lesson. She used the online quiz site kahoot.com to see if students were grasping the concept. From here she would make a decision if she has to change the approach of her lesson to the whole class or just pick the students who struggled with the formative assessment into a small group. At our school every student has an iPad and students are able to use them as an educational resource. With the iPad students are have limitless capabilities, it is especially beneficial for her ELL students. One student in particular is a monolingual, and uses google translate to translate words or phrases she does not understand. While working with word problems the student was able to translate the question and solve it correctly. The teacher also uses countless manipulatives when teaching. While teaching time she had a huge clock for her lesson and gave small clocks to each student to follow along. Manipulatives makes the lesson more meaningful and hands on. 2. Describe how the teacher continuously monitors student learning, engages learners in assessing their progress, and adjusts instruction in response to student learning needs. (InTASC 8(b)) The teacher uses many different monitoring systems in her math class. Those are: formative assessments, summative assessments, and note taking. For engagement she uses video clips of interests, think pair share, asking questions to the students, and uses the online quizzes that allow all students to participate. Based off of her formative assessments she modifies the lesson where she finds fit. For example, during her time and she had a handful of students with a misconception of the minute hand and the hour hand. When it was brought to her attention she made a whole group announcement to reinforce/ clarify that the hour hand is the short hand while the minute hand is the longer hand. She also introduced a Flocabulary video that explained how to tell time and time elapsed. This video/website makes learning into song and because of this all students were engaged and trying to sing along to the lyrics. Showing this video also gave differentiated instruction for her students. 3. Describe how the teacher provides multiple models and representations of concepts and skills with opportunities for learners to demonstrate their knowledge through a variety of products and performances. (InTASC 8(e)) She provides multiple resources and guiding questions during her lessons. For example, using the websites Khan Academy and Study Island both websites either show an additional video on how to solve the problems or give additional notes. While student are using these programs, khan academy to be specific, it will not allow the students to continue on to the next questions until they solve the current question correctly. If the student continues on that current problem it Rio Salado College is one of the Maricopa Community Colleges. The MCCD is an EEO/AA Institution.
2B shows them a quick video on how to solve the question, if not the teacher is always patrolling the classroom to assist. During her note taking she uses a doc cam and take notes with the students. Students are copying her live notes; when is modeling a questions pauses for students to write what she is writing and asks the class what her next step is. To keep the whole class engaged she uses popsicle sticks to pick the next student participant. 4. Describe how the teacher engages all learners in developing higher order questioning skills and metacognitive processes. (InTASC 8(f)) To engage all learners she uses popsicle sticks to call on all of her students to participate. For her lower level struggling students she scaffolds more for them so they are able to answer correctly. For example, she has a student who receives SPED services and is very low in his reading. When this student is called on she reads the questions for him whether it be a word problem or a numerical problem. During a multiplication problem she asked the student to skip count instead of finding the product in their head. The question that was asked was 2 x 6. She asked the student to skip count by 2, 6 times. The student wrote the skip counting on his notebook and was able to come up with 12. To include her other students, she required them to write another form/ way they could of found the answer. Some students answered with I memorized my 2s and others answered by making 2 groups of six. 5. Describe how the teacher engages learners in using a range of learning skills and technology tools to access, interpret, evaluate, and apply information. (InTASC 8(g)) Like mentioned before all of our students have iPads, with that being said our students have access to many online tools that can assist them in their learning. Some programs/ websites that she uses religiously are: Khan Academy, Study Island, Kahoot, Quizziz and google classroom. However, even though students have this access she always requires that her students show their work on a scratch piece of paper. This way, if a student makes a mistake and gets the answer wrong she is able to locate where the problem was in their work. Her students really enjoy using the online quizzes though, she gives a prize to the top 3 students every time. With a simple prize students are more competitive and eager to find the correct answer. 6. At the completion of your required field experience hours, write a summary of your field experience. This should include an overview of your field experience and specific information that either changed or enhanced your thinking about teaching or your particular coursework. (use additional paper as needed) (InTASC 2(a), 2(g), 2(h), 2(l), 2(m), 9(l), 9(m), 9(n)) This semesters Field Experience was very beneficial. This year, my school departmentalized so I only teach English and Social Studies. Seeing these lessons really kept me in touch with Math. I really hope next year I get to teach math again and use these strategies and resources for my future students because her students actually enjoy math because of how she teaches it. In my 10 hours I viewed lessons from area and perimeter, multiplication and time elapsed. In each lesson she used manipulatives and multiple formative assessments throughout her lesson so she can know what students are understanding the lesson and which are not. She was very effective with making quick changes and modifications if her students were not truly understanding her lesson. She used technology and online resources in all of her lessons because she knows that in the near future less and less students will use paper and pencil. I will definitely take what I learned by observing her and apply it into my own classroom. Rio Salado College is one of the Maricopa Community Colleges. The MCCD is an EEO/AA Institution.
