Read the article
"Developing Computation Competence Among Students Who Struggle With Mathematics."
Briefly summarize the article. Describe how your computational skills compare to your number sense skills. How do mnemonic strategies help students solve basic facts problems? What important concepts do you need to keep in mind as you begin teaching?

The article is about giving strategies for students who struggle with basic computation skills
. These strategies and different instructions have to
ensure that students are understanding what the operation means and they are acquiring the ability to follow step by step processes to get the correct answer. By doing these steps they will become more confident and fluent when solving math problems. Mnemonic strategies are my favorite of all time and it builds computation for students struggling in math! To this day I still remember Please excuse my dear aunt sally and FOIL. Mnemonic strategies give an abbreviation of the steps that need to be completed to get the correct answer. Important concepts that you need to keep in mind are integrating strategies and differentiated instruction because not all students learn the same. Using manipulatives and hands on activities will not only benefit your lower level math students but will also target your ELLs. b.
Try one of the
estimation games
at the
Math Is Fun
Web site. Write a summary
describing which game you chose, the objective of the activity, and how it will benefit students in the classroom.
The estimation game I chose is the multiply by 10s. This game provides a multiplication problem ex 30 x 13. At the bottom of the page there is a number line where students are able to estimate where they think the answer is. The number line at the bottom ranges from 100-1000, students need to put their cursor on the number line and chose their estimated answer. The closer your estimate is to the actual answer the more points the student receives. This is a timed test and the goal is to achieve as many points as possible in the set time. Students will benefit from this game because it is challenging them to do mental math. By playing this game students will begin to estimate quicker and more efficiently and will also be exposed to the correct answer.

Conduct your own Internet search for a measurement game/activity that would be appropriate for the grade level you want to teach and/or a supplementary resource for your field experience placement.
Last year I conducted an activity that involved a nature walk and my students using their iPads to
take pictures of shapes outside of the classroom. Once my students had 5 pictures taken they used a ruler to measure each side. Once that data is noted they needed to find the area and perimeter of their pictured objects. The purpose of the assignment was to: 1) make a real world connection, 2)allow my students to explore and find shapes in the outside world, 3) practice collecting data on their own and 4)using the data they collected solve for perimeter and area. My students enjoyed this activity very much and it stayed with them, I hear about it to this day 1 year
later. It was difficult at fist getting my kids controlled while we were outside but as soon as we started they were all engaged and having fun while taking their photographs.
