Matriculating through the DNP Program
In attending the live “Doctor of Nursing Orientation Webinar,” it was a pleasure to put
names with faces. Dr. Katherine Fetter gave great insight into how the program moves through
courses. My concern about matriculating through the program was, “Can I, do it?” Dr. Fetter
informed us that the faculty of the GCU DNP program are willing to answer our questions and
help guide us through this journey.
Expectations, Challenges, and Strengths
The program expects students to work at a pace designed for full-time learners.
It is
expected that DNP students contribute to both discussion posts with an average of 350-400
words in length and include at least two current, peer-reviewed references.
Each student must
also give substantive feedback to their peers to equal five posts per week.
These discussion
questions, posts, and feedback help the classroom develop and dialogue where we, as students,
can get to know each other and provide feedback to help support and advance topics discussed
weekly.
My biggest challenge will be ensuring I utilize resources for assignments and balance my
family, work, and student life. Challenges seem never-ending as students try to balance their
home life, work, and school.
Students can find meaning in this chaotic world by refocusing on
professional values to get a greater sense of direction and envision a better time (Ghabour
(2020).
Sometimes, I know the answer because I have viewed the file or watched a video once,
only to discover that I could have reread the material and asked more questions to ensure that my
information is accurate and will help me complete assignments confidently.

I think my strength is my anxiety.
I want to get things done beforehand to have leeway in
case something unexpected comes up.
Although stress can be harmful, I use it to give me the
constant need to complete a task at least daily.
Strategic Plan
My strategic plan to be successful in each course is to stay ahead of assignments.
I will
utilize the GCU library for research and reach out to the DNP community and my fellow students
in the class when I need clarification on an assignment.
I have decided to work less at my part-
time job to spend more time researching, writing, and responding to my peers in the evenings. I
will also utilize the DNP program documents as they will illustrate how assignments, charts, and
templates should be formatted. Motivation will not be a problem for me, as one of my strengths
is self-motivation. This program is new to me now, and if a need arises for motivation, I will look
to my instructor, department chair, and fellow students.
Information Literacy
In my words, information literacy is the ability that one possesses to gather data,
information, and use that information to develop a plan or help acquire further knowledge.
Many tools have been given for students to find, gather, and analyze to evaluate and apply that
information.
Some devices are found in the DNP community folders, such as Direct Practice
Improvement Project Groups and Associated Milestones, where an example helps the students to
know each course’ milestone is expected, and the required documents provided to show that the
milestone has been completed.
Other resources include but are not limited to DPI Project
Examples, Newsletters, DNP curriculum meetings, Quality Improvement Resources, Reflection
Journal Templates, and many other resources found in the DNP folder.
