YouTube Project Proposal Name: Lea Sutton Date: 10/11/23 Company Data YouTube is an Internet and Video Hosting organization that has over 100 local platform versions all over the globe. It’s currently the best video upload site and the 2 nd most visited online site after Google. With 2,800 employees working all over the world, the platform has 2.5 billion users, making up almost one-third of the entire internet (HubSpot). YouTube’s global advertising revenues amounted to about $29.24 billion in 2022 (HubSpot). Company History “Our mission is to give everyone a voice and show them the world. We believe that everyone deserves to have a voice, and that the world is a better place when we listen, share and build community through our stories” (YouTube). YouTube first launched in 2005 after its 3 founders, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim decided that they needed a better video upload site. While YouTube initially had difficulty getting traffic in the first few months of their initial launch, received $11.5 million from investors, and thereafter sparked the internet in 2006. When YouTube picked up enough traction, Google approached the founders and purchased the platform for $1.65 billion. Through many investments, collaborations, and support for content creators on the website, YouTube invented an easily accessible and reliable video uploading and sharing platform and video monetization for content creators and advertisers. Main Competitors Vimeo – Founded by filmmakers, this platform caters to professional content creators with ad-free content and high-quality video options in their interface. Twitch – The live-streaming platform is best known for its gaming content. It has live interactions built-in for communities to share tips and otherwise interact with others. Vevo – A platform for only music videos with high-quality music. TED – This platform is for intellectual conference recordings and offers over 3000 videos of speakers discussing global issues on all sorts of niche topics. Issues YouTube has gained quite the following in the past 18 years, but not without some organizational and platform-based issues. Some of these issues are quality and copyright control, spread of misinformation, inappropriate content (despite the strict Terms of Service policies), intrusive advertisements, lack of privacy from data collection, lack of environmental and social sustainability, and a lack of fairness in revenue-sharing with content creators. Although YouTube has made significant efforts to tackle these issues, they still unfortunately arise for average users and content creators alike. Rationale I chose YouTube as the company I was interested in researching because I enjoy learning the processes behind marketing, content creation, and the operations of websites. Something that drew me in about YouTube was how involved the platform is in my average day, from school, work, to personal enjoyment. As I’m also a Video Production major, researching the employment prospects of this organization is right up my alley.
