Running head: STRATEGY FORMULATION 1 Hence, it may not be the case that differentiation is totally not implementable given Walmart’s industry because there are other companies typically Best Buy who competes with Walmart and uses both cost leadership and differentiation but rather it is simply not suited. This same cost leadership strategy best suits Walmart has been chosen (and it is what it is known to have used in the recent past) because to begin with, Walmart is not a company that offers products and services that are distinct or unique to that of its competitors. Additionally, the fact that Walmart sells groceries, home furnishings, clothing and shoes, electronics, and quite a number of other essential items, with the use of the cost leadership strategy (purchasing and operating costs kept low, fewer employees are hired, low-cost health insurance plans are provided to employees, store hours are restricted, everyday low prices all year round, many and frequent rollbacks, effectively managing its supply chain, etc), it would enable Walmart the ability to offer its customers products and services at prices that are lower than that of its competitors, and at the same time increase its sales growth since this will allow the company to attract more customers. Walmart would also be able to maintain a large customer base and its favourable market position as well as continue to achieve global success (“Walmart Cost Leadership Strategy,” 2021). The strategy allows Walmart to ultimately enjoy profit margin increases. Tesla Motors Inc. is an example of a publicly traded company that is founded in the United States of America, and uses the differentiation strategy. This American multinational automotive and clean energy company broadly uses differentiation so that it can successfully compete with its rival automakers such as Ford Motor, General Motors, Nissan, Volkswagen, Audi, etc. in the industry. Tesla is known worldwide for uniqueness when it comes to its business model hence it is one of the companies that many know has and continues to successfully use the differentiation strategy to its competitive advantage. It established itself as a brand that is unique and premium from since its inception as its aim was to become a
2 strong and popular brand in its industry from its very first cutting-edge high performance electric car.
