Bacchus advises his new employer that he has to attend physical therapy on Monday mornings. The employer tells one of their major clients about Bacchus’s therapy sessions so they know when Bacchus is in the office. Has Bacchus’s employer breached his rights to privacy? Explain your answer. The employer has breached Bacchus’s rights to privacy by telling their client about his therapy. Health issues and medications are private aspects of a person’s life. We have laws to protect the privacy of an individual such as social security, family, health services law etc. These laws limit us to use release those critical information. In the above case, the employer releases one confidential information of Bacchus, this information is now vulnerable to misconduct and misuse. Also, the employer did not have to mention the therapy sessions. Rather, the employer should have asked the client to contact Bacchus for the appropriate time or told the client that he is busy on Monday mornings. That way the employer could have given the information without violating his right to privacy. Q UESTION 3 Jasmine has a mild intellectual learning ability. She finds it difficult to keep up in meetings. She has kept this to herself since she started her role for fear of being looked at differently. She’s not sure how her manager might react if she knew. a) What is Jasmine’s responsibility in this situation? Jasmine should tell her manager about her learning ability. It is difficult to confess but it is her responsibility to advocate for herself. She has to speak up about her condition and seek assistance for workplace adjustments. Her colleagues and staff would most likely help her to grow and overcome her challenges. If the workplace is not friendly, there are laws that would protect her rights. She has the rights to employment and no one can harass or look her differently for her intellectual learning ability. If she finds herself in such situation she should consult her lawyer. b) What is Jasmine’s employer’s responsibility in this situation? CHCDIS003 Support Community Participation and Social Inclusion © Advance College Page 13 July 2020 Version 3.0
Jasmine’s employer should try to understand why jasmine finds it difficult to keep up with the meeting. It would be easier for Jasmine to open up if the employer would communicate with her and ask her if there is something that’s bothering her. While doing so the employer should also communicate that she is an integral part of the team and she can rely on them for assistance. If the employer is aware of her condition, the team should make some workplace adjustments such as structured steps with repetition, developing a ‘work buddy’ for learning support and guidance, making notes and pictures to help them remember their daily tasks, and the most important is providing disability awareness training to all staff to help them be confident and respectful of employees with disability. Q UESTION 4 Explain the difference between a person-centred practice and a strengths-based practice. Person-centred practice Person-centred care involves caring for patients by adapting your service to suit their individual wants and needs. It respects their views on what’s best for them, and let them have their own values and priorities in life. Person-centred care puts the person at the heart of their care and offer personalised care, support, and treatment. Supporter needs to get to know patients as a person and actively involve with them in care- related decisions. Strengths-based practice Strengths-based practice is a collaborative process between the person and supporter to allow them to work together to determine an outcome that draws on the person's strengths and assets. The focus in the helping relationship is upon the person’s strengths, desires, interests, aspirations, experience, talents, knowledge, and resiliency. Each person is responsible for his/her own recovery, the participant is the director of the helping effort, supporter serve as caring community living consultants. Relationship is of collaboration, mutuality, and partnership. Working with people in natural settings in the community is the preferred venue for helping Q UESTION 5 How does community inclusion initiative support people with a disability? CHCDIS003 Support Community Participation and Social Inclusion © Advance College Page 14 July 2020 Version 3.0
Community Inclusion is the opportunity to live in the community and be valued for one's uniqueness and abilities, like everyone else. When people come together and join hands together to support each other, people feel secure. One of the things that affects people with disability is fear of being excluded. With community inclusion initiative people find respect, value, and feeling of belonging in a group. This feeling of being a part of community where they are valued and their contribution is meaningful boosts their confidence. Hence, community inclusion initiative supports people with disability. Q UESTION 6 Provide at least three examples of community inclusion for people with a disability. 1. Developing mentoring programs by creating a pool of mentors (people with disabilities who are succeeding in their quest to be included) to reach out and help someone else as a way of giving back something for the opportunities they have been provided. 2. Promotion of universal design strategy that encourages accessibility for all throughout the lifespan. Architects, planners, policymakers, and community come together to design the society. 3. Regular conference and workshops on various topics that educates community such as human rights, political participation, story sharing etc. Q UESTION 7 Describe what ‘active citizenship’ means for people with a disability. Active citizens are people who can use public services, engage in community activities, and involve in decisions making. They are people who can enjoy the rights granted to them by the nation. Everyone should have the rights to active citizenship but that is not the case in many cases. For people with disability there are barriers in each stage, even for the basic human rights such as Education, Job, Security, and Health etc. There are no proper access in various public spaces (design is not universal). There is very few participation of people with disability in decision making, policy making, politics etc. In few countries, people with disabilities are not allowed to run for elections. When, people with disability would get the access to rights as a citizen of a country, they would be active citizens. Q UESTION 8 List two strategies you could use to strengthen the options, networks and services for people with disability CHCDIS003 Support Community Participation and Social Inclusion © Advance College Page 15 July 2020 Version 3.0

6. How should each barrier or challenge be managed? It depends on the type of barrier and challenge that represents for the client. For example, if the client is violent, it should be managed by special attention and strategies to treat this type of behaviours. Or if the client is depressive then medicine or yoga should be considered. 7. Describe the overall feedback and support of the individual and their family members (if relevant). Some of the family’s help a lot to client and this is crucial to their evolution. But there are some families that are just cold to the situation of the client and decide to ignore it and do not pay attention they need. 8. What have been some of your own role limitations or restrictions in this situation? I am not psychologist, so it is difficult for me to treat this type of client. But I have learned that in most cases is just about treating them as normal as human being and communication clearly with them taking into consideration.
