8.1 Short Paper: Telecommuting at MedEx MedEx Harry Davis is the human resources manager for MedEx, a medical billing company. He has serious concerns about the high employee turnover rates at MedEx. Realizing that turnovers come at a significant cost, Harry continually looks at possible future solutions. Implementing telecommuting is one area in which he has a special interest. Currently, MedEx workers have to deal with traffic and parking issues on their daily trips. In an attempt to obtain opinions and recommendations for business improvements, MedEx surveyed its present employees. One significant finding from the results was that a considerable number of employees strongly preferred telecommuting, suggesting that this change was widely desired by them. Telecommuting Option MedEx faces a big problem with high turnover rates, therefore providing telecommuting as an alternative would be a good idea. Employees frequently report having trouble getting to work, so permitting telecommuting would reduce the stress that comes with the daily drive. In order to address problems like parking and traffic, telecommuting appears to be a workable solution that could lessen these difficulties. Also, using telecommuting may result in lower overhead expenses for office space and supplies while also promoting higher productivity. Telecommuting is not only a workable answer for the problems of today, but it is also a useful tactic for luring in and keeping workers who have a strong preference for working remotely (Martocchio, 2019). 2
8.1 Short Paper: Telecommuting at MedEx Advantages, Disadvantages and Challenges There are a few benefits to telecommuting, as well as some disadvantages. One important advantage is that it gives employees more flexibility at work, showing higher productivity (Gertenback, 2021). A common explanation for this increased output is that happier and healthier employees who have some degree of control over their working lives are more productive. Furthermore, there can be financial savings associated with telecommuting, especially when it comes to hiring and training. The talent pool is expanded by accepting remote employment, which appeals especially to the younger generations who value flexibility (Gertenbach, 2021). The favorable image that businesses that provide this kind of flexibility create can greatly improve word-of-mouth recruitment efforts. Additionally, as those who work remotely typically report better well-being and lower levels of stress, telecommuting may raise morale (Gertenbach, 2021). This strategy might also help close generational gaps in the workplace. There are a few disadvantages to telecommuting, such as possible distractions and fewer opportunities for group brainstorming. Although working from home gives workers more scheduling flexibility, there are more distractions available, such television, housework, kids, or electronics. Compared to a traditional office setting, where workers can easily hold brainstorming sessions with coworkers to discuss work-related difficulties, the home environment is very different. An employee's performance may suffer in the absence of these cooperative relationships since there is less opportunity for idea sharing and problem-solving techniques. 3

8.1 Short Paper: Telecommuting at MedEx Recommendations I believe that allowing employees to work from home at MedEx would be beneficial. This change may result in reduced employee turnover and overall cost savings for the business. My suggestion for MedEx would be to start a small number of employment with telecommuting and then gradually move them over to this type of remote work. The next step might be to allow telecommuting for all positions that qualify. The successful execution of the rules will depend on the establishment of specific settings, including deadlines and regular in-person meetings. I propose implementing a policy that requires employees to come into the office once a month to review progress and talk about any advancements as well as to stay updated on corporate changes in order to foster a sense of community and connection. 4
