Individual Deliverable #1: Self-Assessment and Job Application Memo 11/21/2023 xxx BMGT 365 7380 Organizational Leadership Dr. Irwin, Professor
To: Ms. Alexandria Marvel, CEO and President of Life Science Nutraceuticals, Inc. From: xxx Date: November 21, 2023 Subject: Director of Finance position I. Introduction My name is Nicole Saia. I recently served as a member of the Succession Planning Committee at Life Science Nutraceuticals, Inc. (LSN) to assist in filling upcoming vacancies in several key leadership positions. This memo is my formal request for consideration for the upcoming position of Director of Finance. Throughout this memo my various leadership competencies will be displayed through multiple survey results as well as viewable within the Appendix of this memo. II. Director of Finance Leadership Competencies The Director of Finance position does not require its applicant to have a background in finance, however, this complex position does require its leader to be competent in strategic planning and the ability to perceive the company’s overall big picture. The Finance Director must remain open-minded and flexible (SHRM, 2008, “Global Executive Competencies,” fig. 2). This position requires its leader to demonstrate accountability with a commitment to lifelong learning. While using strategic controls, the Director of Finance must use financial metrics to measure the overall effectiveness of the organization (Maloney, 2019, “5 Ways Leaders Can Produce Long-Term Organizational Effectiveness,” para. 2).   Described as an Idealist, I strive for continuous learning and growth. Idealists are high-energy achievers who believe in the positive potential of everyone around them (Leadership IQ, 2023, “Test Results: Idealist,” para. 1). As a leader, I remain open-minded and flexible in thoughts and tactics, a vital leadership competency for this position. As an internal candidate with medium-high ethical values, my leadership competencies and qualifications align with LSN’s four core values: Customer-Centricity, Innovation, Knowledge, and Sustainability. III. Jung Typology Test and Self-Esteem Test The first two self-assessment tests provided are the HumanMetrics Jung Typology Test and the Self-Esteem Test. Upon completion of the Jung Personality Test, my results depict my personality as an Introvert. My complete results are shown as ISTJ: Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging. Often called inspectors, ISTJ’s are characterized to have a keen sense of right and wrong, especially in their area of interest and/or responsibility, and are noted for their devotion to duty (HumanMetrics, 2023, “ISTJ Type Description,” para. 1). Leaders with a strong sense of character and humility inspire and lead others with their ability to possess
tremendous honesty and integrity, and be a role model who leads by example (The Ken Blanchard Company, n.d., “Question 2: Values and Integrity,” p.3, para. 1). As a leader and ISTJ personality, I perform at the highest efficiency when employing a step-by- step approach. The self-esteem test is an essential tool that allows us to analyze our ability to function in a healthy way. Upon completion of Queendom’s Self-Esteem Test, my overall result of 55, is mid-range and leaves room for growth. The score of 55, indicating stable self-esteem, contributes to effective problem-solving abilities and the assertiveness needed to achieve a continuous desire to fulfill potential (Queendom, 2023, “Self-Esteem Test Results,” para. 1). IV. Communication Skills Self-Assessment Inventory The third self-assessment is the Communication Skills Test. Out of 100, I scored 56, indicating a good foundation of communication skills. As depicted within the results, as a leader I take time to prepare all communications, think things through before speaking, tailor my message(s) to suit the person(s) I am talking to, speak up if I have something valuable to contribute, and always make a conscious effort to match my body language to the message(s) I want to convey (HTC Consulting, 2023, “Communication Skills Self-Assessment Inventory: Results.”). Effective communication is perhaps the most important leadership competency an individual can hone. The ability to use a variety of communication styles to generate effective two-way communication builds trust, prevents performance problems, and gives leaders the ability to articulate goals and objectives to pave they way for healthy working relationships (The Ken Blanchard Company, n.d., “Question 2: Communicating/listening,” p.3, para. 1). My ability to communicate with my team effectively and efficiently will help LSN improve company culture and prevent any misunderstandings. In addition to excellent communication skills and willingness to take risks, this position requires an individual who is aware and perceptive of the business environment and future opportunities (Center for Simplified Strategic Planning, Inc., 2008, para. 6). V. Know Your Top 5 Strengths and the Leadership Style Test The results from the High5 Strengths Test and Leadership Style Test indicate my top leadership competencies and explain my leadership style. According to my results of the High5 Strengths Test, I am best at analyzing, problem-solving, empathizing, strategizing, and thinking. These five strengths are all qualifications LSN requires of their leaders. The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the finance department and expected to aid in strategic planning with LSN executives. My skills in analyzing and strategic thinking and planning will ensure LSN’s goals are achieved. As an analyst and strategist, I become energized when searching for simplicity and clarity within a large amount of data, while looking at the big picture, which enables me to easily find the best solution to complex situations (High5 Test, 2023, “Test Results,” para. 1 and 4). The Leadership Style Test results indicate my leadership style is Idealist. As stated above, idealist leaders are high-energy achievers who have a strong desire to lifelong learning. Idealists are often charismatic, open-minded, prize creativity from themselves and others, and inspire others with their intuition and idealism (Leadership IQ, 2023, “Test Results: Idealist,”

para. 1). As an idealist leader, I would find common ground amongst my team and create a positive work environment. Through involving their team and encouraging them to take ownership, an effective leader instills a sense of pride that can unleash performance and productivity (The Ken Blanchard Company, n.d., “Question 2: Empowerment,” p.3, para. 1). VI. Cultural Intelligence Test and Emotional Intelligence Test Upon completion of the Cultural Intelligence Test, it was determined that I have high cultural intelligence (CQ). Cultural Intelligence is the ability to cross divide and thrive in multiple cultures (Common Purpose, 2023, “High CQ Test Results,” para. 1). With the upcoming expansion to Saudi Arabia, global and cultural intelligence are two crucial leadership competencies that the Finance Director should possess (Stockton et al., 2014, p. 12). Emotional Intelligence is how we perceive, evaluate, express, and control emotions. The ability to express and control emotions to communicate with and relate to others effectively and constructively is just as important as a leader’s ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others (Cherry, 2023, para. 1). The Emotional Intelligence Test reflects my ability to identify others feelings, accept and embrace change, accept responsibility, and manage emotions in difficult situations. Although I have a lower score of self-acceptance and self-awareness, I have an excellent sense of self-management, social- awareness, and relationship management (Global Leadership Foundation, 2023, “The Global EI Test Results,” fig. 1). Additionally, as a leader I have a high awareness of personal strengths and limitations, a strong sense of curiosity, and feelings of empathy and sensitivity to the feelings of other people. VII. The Ultimate Ethics Quiz The results of the Ultimate Ethics Quiz show my commitment and ability to operate with a medium-high ethical value (GotoQuiz.com, 2023, “Test Results”, fig. 1). At LSN, we value sustainability, for profit and planet, therefore, its leaders must demonstrate their ability to display ethical behavior and exhibit integrity (SHRM, 2008, “Essential Leadership Competencies,” fig. 1). My level of ethics displays a natural ability to connect with team members and customers with a high level of responsibility and trust. With my ability to lead ethically, I will ensure LSN’s core values, mission, and vision are consistently met and recognized for the common good of the company. Along with integrity and trust, my high ethical standards include respect, fairness, transparency, and honesty. VIII. Conclusion  By employing an idealist leader, LSN will create diversity and inclusion in the modern workplace, allowing for exceptional growth in international business relationships and ensuring positive performance throughout the entire company. My ability to maintain professional relationships, deliver clear, concise, and effective communications, and remain open-minded and flexible will ensure LSN remains a top competitor in the health, personal care, and fitness industry. As a leader at LSN, I will make sure to operate in the highest ethical manner, while using strategic and financial controls to ensure the department operates
effectively and efficiently. If chosen for the position, I am confident in my ability to align my team with the vision and core values of LSN, support strategies, and be the catalyst for developing the individual bench strength to move the company forward (The Ken Blanchard Company, n.d., p.1, para. 1). Thank you for your consideration for the position of Director of Finance. Regards, xxx Succession Planning Committee Member
