I admire the way you presented the differences between autocratic and democratic leadership situation theories. While autocratic leadership may prove an effective style for some organizations, I believe LSN would benefit more with a new hire who leans more on the democratic side of leadership style. As you state, an authoritarian leader may be more likely to abuse their power, keeping a ‘tight leash’ on their employees, which has the potential to cause resentment and employee dis-satisfaction. With one of LSN core values being Innovation, I believe if we lean more towards searching for a democratic leadership style, employees would be able to participate in the decision-making process, which would increase moral and ultimately increase LSN profitability. As Hunter stated, I really like the recommended changes to the job posting verbiage that you used. The changes seem to lean more towards a democratic leadership style versus autocratic if we want to find the perfect applicant who possesses leadership qualities, not only management skills. Managers and autocratic leaders foster the ‘empower-and-track’ approach, which worked for LSN in the past when they operated with a top-down decision-making culture. However, since LSN is interested in shifting to a more collaborative, innovative, decision-making culture, a democratic leader may be the best fit – as Trisha posts in her memo, this style allows all group members the chance to participate in the decision-making process. I feel if we use your phrases within our job announcement, we will have a very strong posting. I really like how you state that changing the word from ‘manager’ to ‘leader’ throughout the job announcement will increase the attention of candidates who view themselves not only as managers, but also a leader. A leader is needed to ensure LSN is able to maintain their core values while successfully implementing plans to grow their business into other countries and develop its cosmetic and food lines. The lucrative expansion opportunity requires a leader who is dedicated to the company’s growth while maintaining its commitment to be socially and economically responsible.
