2 Leadership Autobiography The ability to inspire, guide, and empower others to reach their full potential is the catalyst for positive change in any setting. French and Raven's Six Bases of Power, which include legitimate power, reward power, coercive power, expert power, referent power, and informational power, are like the different colors on the palette of leadership. Throughout my leadership journey, I have interacted with various individuals who wielded different bases of power, shaping my leadership style in the process. Legitimate Power During the initial years of my career, I was supervised by Mr. Kalle, who was a Regional Manager. His title provided him with legitimate power, which he used to make critical decisions and set strategic goals. Clear communication, decisiveness, and the ability to set a vision were among Mr. Kalle's leadership traits. His approach influenced my leadership style by emphasizing the importance of setting clear expectations and demonstrating confidence in decision-making. Coercive Power In my first leadership role, I encountered a team member, David, who had mastered the art of using coercive power. David would often threaten team members with unfavorable assignments or even job insecurity if they didn't meet his expectations. While this approach occasionally resulted in short- term compliance, it ultimately led to a negative team environment. David's leadership taught me that relying on coercive power alone can create fear and tension within a team. I learned to balance this power base with a more constructive and motivating leadership style. Reward Power As I advanced in my career, I had a supervisor, Mark, who wielded reward power effectively. He used his authority to provide employees with valuable bonuses and recognition for exceptional performance. Mark's leadership traits included recognizing achievements, offering feedback, and
3 motivating employees to excel. Mark's approach influenced my leadership style by highlighting the importance of acknowledging and rewarding exceptional contributions within the team. Referent Power In my mid-career stage, I was fortunate to work with a colleague, Sarah, who naturally commanded referent power. Her charismatic personality, ethics, and authenticity drew team members to her. Sarah's leadership emphasized the significance of building meaningful relationships, setting an example as a leader, and fostering trust within the team. Her influence guided me to place an increased focus on developing referent power and personal integrity. Expert Power During my career, I crossed paths with Mr. Anderson, a renowned expert in his field. His deep knowledge and expertise granted him expert power, and colleagues often sought his guidance. Mr. Anderson's leadership traits included a commitment to continuous learning, generously sharing knowledge, and being approachable. I learned from him the importance of staying informed and continuously improving my expertise to gain the respect and trust of my team. Informational Power In my current role, I collaborate with a team member, Lisa, who possesses informational power due to her access to critical data and market insights. Lisa's leadership traits include transparency, effective communication, and the ability to translate complex information into actionable strategies. Lisa's influence reinforced the importance of being well-informed and using information to make informed decisions. Conclusion Incorporating French and Raven's Six Bases of Power has been instrumental in my journey to becoming a more effective leader. Just as an artist combines various shades to create a masterpiece, a successful leader must master the art of blending power bases to influence and uplift those around us.
