Field Experience A: Leadership and Collaboration Leadership and Collaboration Effective collaboration between general education and special education teachers is crucial in providing a meaningful and supportive learning environment for children with disabilities. Achieving mutual goals that benefit students requires dividing responsibilities and resources between public education and special education teachers. Collaborative leadership is pivotal in problem-solving and decision-making processes that positively impact students. Special education teachers advocate for their student's needs in the classroom and help develop a better understanding of mathematical concepts. General education teachers, on the other hand, are responsible for creating highly effective lessons that promote high-level thinking skills. Through teamwork, educators and students alike can establish successful classroom relationships, leading to better learning outcomes and a more supportive learning environment. Roles and Responsibilities Providing quality education for disabled students in an inclusive and least restrictive environment is essential. Collaborative development of inclusive lessons that cater to the needs of all students, including typical learning peers, can enhance students' autonomy and improve their learning outcomes. The special education teacher is responsible for creating supplementary learning opportunities for students with disabilities. During an observation of an inclusive classroom and lesson, a teach-and-assist model was utilized at the outset of the lesson, transitioning to alternative teaching once independent learning began. The general education teacher led a math lesson on
Field Experience A: Leadership and Collaboration finding the area and perimeter of a rectangle. In contrast, the special education teacher assisted students experiencing difficulty understanding the language or solving the problem. This co-taught math lesson was successful, and it will aid educators in developing positive relationships with general education teachers while ensuring that lessons are appropriate for all students. In the classroom, students play an integral role and must advocate for themselves by communicating their needs to succeed in school. During the observed lesson, one student asked for assistance with multiplication problems to determine the area. The teacher assisting the students provided the necessary tools to help them multiply numbers. In contrast, the special education teacher advocated for their students' needs and offered the required support to complete the assignment. Advantages and Disadvantages of Collaborating Collaboration during mathematics lessons holds numerous advantages. Initially, it reduces the teacher-student ratio, enabling educators to focus on the individual needs of each pupil. During my recent observation, the special education teacher took a small group of students struggling with mathematics to a separate table for specialized attention while other students worked independently. The teacher employed multiplication charts and manipulatives to help these students visualize how to solve problems related to area and perimeter. It was intriguing to witness how quickly they grasped the concepts when provided with the right tools.

Field Experience A: Leadership and Collaboration Nevertheless, there are some downsides to collaboration. For instance, some students may have to catch up on the general education curriculum if they spend more time on a particular lesson aspect. Moreover, some students may feel their expectations differ from their peers, inducing a sense of being singled out. Despite the potential drawbacks, collaborative learning is crucial to ensure students learn according to their unique needs. Successful collaboration between teachers and special education teachers fosters an all-inclusive environment that guarantees that all students feel safe, supported, and engaged in their learning.
