ROUGH OUTLINE WORKSHEET Paper topic: The Benefits and Drawbacks of Remote Work for Employees and Employers Paper structure (or combination of structures): Pro/con Intro: Write down an idea for how might you introduce your topic. With the rise of technology and changing work culture, remote work has become a popular option for both employees and employers. While remote work offers several benefits, such as reduced commuting time and increased work-life balance, there are also some disadvantages that need to be considered. This paper aims to examine the advantages and difficulties associated with working remotely, considering the perspectives of both workers and employers. Background:  Create bullet points based on the following. o What parts of your topic need to be defined (if any)? o What’s the history of your topic OR what important context does your audience need to understand the issue? o This may be the place where you describe the “problem” and where it came from. o This may be where you address misconceptions about your topic and where they came from.  Define the term "remote work" and explain what it entails.  Provide a brief history of remote work and how it has evolved over time.  Highlight the impact of technology on the rise of remote work.  Discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift towards remote work.  Explain the different types of remote work arrangements, such as full-time, part-time, and hybrid.  Highlight the challenges faced by employees and employers in implementing remote work policies. Sections of the Paper:  Create sections and bulleted lists based on the following. o If you’re doing a pro/con paper, it’s usually best to start by listing the advantages (and this may take several paragraphs). In the next section of the paper, you could address the disadvantages (and this may take several paragraphs). o If you’re doing a problem/solution paper you may go into detail about the problem here, what caused it and what the effects are. Or, if you’ve already described the problem, you may start writing about possible solutions here. You may even include pros/cons for each solution. o If you’re doing a misconception paper, you may start talking about the problems of the misconception in more depth here. Or, if you’ve already described the problems with the misconception, you may start to write about how we can overcome the misconception. If you have one specific way to address the misconception, you might also include the pros/cons of fixing the misconception in that way. Pros:

 Increased Flexibility: Remote work allows employees to work from anywhere at any time, which can improve work-life balance and reduce commuting time.  Cost Savings: Remote work can result in cost savings for both employees and employers, such as reduced office space and travel expenses.  Improved Productivity: Remote work can lead to increased productivity, as employees can work in a more comfortable and personalized environment with fewer distractions.  Reduced Truancy: Remote work can also reduce truancy, as employees are less likely to take sick leave or time off due to family responsibilities.  Increased Employee Satisfaction: Remote work can lead to greater job satisfaction, as employees can work in a way that suits their individual needs and preferences. Cons:  Lack of Social Interaction: Remote work can be isolating, as employees may miss out on the social interaction that comes with working in an office environment.  Communication Challenges: Remote work can also present communication challenges, as it can be more difficult to collaborate and communicate with colleagues when working remotely.  Increased Risk of Burnout: Remote work can lead to an increased risk of burnout, as employees may find it difficult to switch off from work when they are working from home.  Reduced Work-Life Balance: While remote work can improve work-life balance, it can also have the opposite effect, as employees may find it difficult to switch off from work when they are working from home.  Reduced Team Cohesion: Remote work can also lead to reduced team cohesion, as employees may feel less connected to their colleagues and the organization as a whole. More sections of the paper:  Include any additional sections you need.  Discuss the importance of communication and collaboration in remote work environments.  Provide case studies of companies that have successfully implemented remote work policies and the benefits they have realized.  Provide statistical data on the prevalence of remote work and its impact on the workforce.  Discuss the legal and regulatory issues related to remote work, such as tax implications and labor laws.

Conclusion: Give a brief overview of what you hope readers will take away from your essay. In my essay, I hope to present a balanced view of remote work, outlining both its benefits and drawbacks for both employees and employers. By the end of the essay, readers should have a better understanding of the pros and cons of remote work and be able to make informed decisions about whether or not it is a good fit for their own work situation. REFLECTION After creating the outline, answer the following questions. 1. Based on your outline, do you see any areas where your research is especially strong ? For example, do you have a lot of sources that help you define your topic or give pros/cons for it? Yes, I have found many sources that discuss the pros and cons of remote work for employees and employers. Some of these sources are based on data, while others provide more qualitative insights. I believe that my diverse collection of sources will give me a solid foundation for my essay. 2. Based on your outline, do you see any areas where your research is especially weak ? For example, do you see any sections of the paper where you don’t have any sources to support what you want to say? Yes, there are a few areas of my outline where my research is relatively weak. Specifically, I don't have as many sources to support some of the drawbacks of remote work for employers and the impact of remote work on employee mental health as I am looking for. While I have found a few sources that touch on these topics, I would like to find more to ensure that I can provide a balanced and nuanced perspective on these issues. To address this gap in my research, I plan to delve deeper into academic journals, industry reports, and case studies that specifically focus on the challenges faced by employers in managing remote teams and the potential effects of remote work on employee well-being. 3. Do you see any places where you could do a specific search for scholarly sources on your topic? For example, if your topic was “Paying College Athletes” it might be hard to find scholarly research on that specific debate, but you could find scholarly research on “college students and financial stress” or “history of college athletics in the U.S.” or “student athletes and factors for success.” Yes, I believe that there are a few areas where I could do a more specific search for scholarly sources on my topic. For example, I could look for research that examines the impact of remote work on employee productivity or the factors that contribute to successful remote
